If you had a choice...what type factory reed blocks are best??
The 7pedal, 5pedal, or the newer 4pedal? Of course all would have boyensen. Which ones are rubber coated. Who makes the best aftermarket reed blocks?
Inquiring minds want to know!!!

It all depends on what you have and what you are wanting it to do. If you are going racing with a 2.5 Drag or an S-3000 you want 14 (or 7) petal high flow cages. If you have a 2.0 and or 2.4 & you plan to use it on the lake under about 8000 rpm I would suggest a set of high flow 10(or 5) petal high flow cages. On stock motors that are not going to see any high rpm use, say under 6500, I don't really see much benefit in using a high flow reed cage of any sort... What motor are you running and what are you going to do with it? Those things will dictate what reed setup you need to run.
Of course rubber coated blocks are always good due to extended reed life and sealing.
Several companies make good cages. I have gotten modified stock cages from Marine Dynamics in Irving Tx. and had excelent luck with them. I have heard rumors that JSRE has a new reed block to replace the 14 petal Merc that is rubber coated and supposed to work very well.

Russ iz right about the big cages...The 5 peddles keep the torque and bottom end in a river motor, so they they are best for river motors...I find the 4 peddles to be better than the 5 peddles...the 4 peddles are rubber coated and will out flow a set of modified 5 peddles...I have dun a lot of testing with reads, cages ,a and manifolds...The 4 peddles have cum out on top for the smaller CI motors(and even 2.5's on river)...The 4 peddles keep the bottom end and will still turn 9000+ rpms...Now this is with a Carb motor!!! The 14 peddle cages don't really hurt a EFI motor(at least a 2.5)...I have been testing sum aftermarket cages and reeds, and from the ones I've tested, the MAD caged do the better of them...the MAD cages take away sum bottom end on a 2.0, but add 400 rpm on the top...1/4 mile numbers are not as good az the 4 peddles wit the 2.0, but I think they will really help a 2.5...I have the 5 peddle replacements, and they flow dam near as much as a stock 14 peddle cage...the great thing about the newer 4 peddle rubber cages, is You ain't got to touch them, just bolt on the reeds and install...If U clean up ya manifold and fill in the dead spots, U will see more of an improvement than any reeds change, and with the combo of reeds cages and manifold work, You will be suprised...T-REX:cool:

Hey Rex,
And others, I spoke w/ Jay Smith a few evenings ago and he mentioned puttying up the manifold. I didn't understand him until I read your post before this one. Anyone care to describe or even post some pics of a properly filled manifold? And is this a worthwhile endeavor on a mild (under 7500 rpm) lake motor?

Thanks

I have never dun it on a lake motor, but if it's a carb motor, it would have to work...It's a lot of work, but to me it's worth the time...I'll see if I can snap a pic and post it for U...REX:cool:

Thanks T Rex,
I would like to see what is involved if you get a chance sometime. My motor is a Promax200. I'm going to put one of Tony B.s units on it and some 4 petal reeds/cages and I'll likely ditch the rev limiter and oil injection. I don't plan on going inside the block until wear dictates it. But any "easy" mod that will leave this motor dock friendly, I'm probably going to try.

With EFI the manifold don't really matter...I didn't notice any change when doing a efi manifold...the manifold iz so short and it works in a diffrent manner than a carb...I rtied to take a pic of the carb one, but it wuz only good enuff to confuse U...so I deleted it...with the addition of svs and 4peddle cages, U will be happy...the motor will be capibal of mid 7000rpm+ and still git U there and back with good fuel economy...REX

And a whole lot easier. The older I get, the more I like easy. I'm waiting on the reeds, cages and gaskets. Once I get them in Tony is going to get my money! And once he gets my money I am going to need that fuel economy!
