Mercury Outboard Serial Number Guide???

Is ther sucha thing as a mercury Outboard serial number guide that gits more specific than the one on max rules and has older motor info than parts express?? say a book or cd or something so i dont have to keep buggin you folks when i find a good deal on a parts motor. and need to know what it is????Thanks for all your help

Thanks Mark that is a big help. do you happen to have anything that gets more specific. since the motor i found today is apparently a 1977 by that guide. what i am askin is is there a guide that will tell year block size etc by the serial number. as in this is a 77 175 2.4? maybe?
