No date for this photo, but this is Allison's first Mod-VP hull ever made. Another canard wing design that looks wild.

One of the years that I ran the NOA Kilo's in Knoxville, Darris had that boat there trying to set whatever class record ran the 4 cyl 850 Mercs. If I remember right he didn't get the record with it. That would've made it late 70'sor 80/81 at the latest.

Funny how tastes change over time. Back then I thought the boat was butt ugly.............. now I think it's cool as hell.

about the time and expense it takes to come up with designs like that nowadays. I'm sure Darris didn't think there would be enough market for that boat to make money on, yet he built it anyway. He's truly passionate about the sport. Thats one awesome photo !:D

The 1/4 master was designed from this boat, Darris allowed the designer/builder to come and look @ the one he still has to get some ideas back in the early 1990's.

Darris' first patent was for a Mod-VP type hull design. Those drawings have a conventional round nose but it does have the rear wing. Patent #4,004,534 was applied for November 28, 1975.

That actual hull was on display at the 50th Anniv lastyear. It is the first "pod-Vee" ever created by anyone. Did Darris create it or did Mr. Paul? I was thinking the date on the plaque at the rally said late 60s? When did Roark Summerford work for Allison?

I have a pic of it somewhere, I'll try and find it.

ps
I looked in the 50th Allison Anniv gallery on this site and Maureen shot a two pics of this hull. A side shot that shows about 3/4 of the boat and a head on shot.
