View Full Version : Verado
I saw them for the first time at the NJ boat show. They look sharp on fishing boats, this from someone that called them UGLY in the past. I guess that it's geared towards fishing boats? I think they could have had more pictures of it on boats when they advertised it??? Still looks like a "Shrimp" when it by itself. I can see it in a different view now though!

Many of the people that criticize the Verado have never even actually seen them, let alone experienced their power and performance. :)

I kind of like the look of them, and from what I hear they are awsome as long as you aren't trying to get every last mph out of a boat.
I saw a few at the Detroit show, but no Mercury booth there. So, no cut-away model, no Verado with the hood off, no test tank. Just fishing boat dealers...
I guess the fishing and non-performance boats make the most money? Maybe that's way they get pushed at the shows? The folks that "Feel The Need For Speed" know were to find what they want?

Talked to someone a week or two ago and was told they were going to stop making the Verado. Talked to a Mercury rep today at a dealership and he said they were going to quit making the Verado. He said it hasn't sold as well as they wanted it to due in part to its price. He said that the Opti in the standard series and the race series was their top seller in the "big" motors and was hurting the Verados. He said that the four strokes were selling ok in the small fishing motors, but that the general boating community overall still wanted the two strokes, that being the reason they brought back the standard EFI series up to 150HP. He also in a VERY round about way hinted that they may even start back making the 2.5 200 EFI.Don't know if thats the gospel but thats what I was told.Hope he's right!

Your information on the Verado is totally false. I'm heading to the Keys next week to test some boats with Verado power - now that's something I'm looking forward to.

You have got to wonder why Mercury is pushing the 250XS and backed off of the Verado. I also wonder why there were ZERO Verados at the BassMaster Classic. I have seen them and I have run them. I dont like the why they look and they run like a nice 4 stroke.

Merc will stop building the Verado at the same time that Ford quits making the F-150. (It's going to be a COLD day in Hell!)

thats about the way i see it. they look like they are outselling the big optis 4 to 1 on saltwater boats. the friggin things are everywhere. Its getting to the point that, if you see a 20'+ salt boat and it has black motors, they will likely be verados. that said, the opti seems to sell more on bass and flats boats. WTF sense would it make for merc to spend 6+ years and COUNTLESS hours of r&d on a motor, then turn around and AXE it before it even has a chance to get out? Guys in FL are lucky, we get to see all the cool stuff from salt and freshwater, and see soon after its released. Id imagine alot of other places would be lucky to see a couple verados a YEAR, I see 20 or 30 boats with them A WEEK.
but what do I know, I'm just an Idiot kid who has only been in boats for 2 years and doesnt know anything

GregLike I said ,just quoting what the rep said. From his mouth, not mine. If it's not true then maybe they need to re-evaluate some of their reps,or one in particular.I like the Verado for its intended use so makes no difference to me. Just relaying the info I heard from one person and another in particular that I thought would have been a reliable source since he was a Merc rep,but maybe not so reliable after all.But I still hope he was right about the possibility of the 200 EFI returning. But if he was full of crap about the Verado then maybe he's full of crap about all of it.

I drove a 23 ft center console salt water fishing boat with a pair of 275's at a dealer meeting in Florida last fall. I was very disappointed in the performance. I can also say lots of nice things about it but i would not buy one. Especially for the price. And regardless of the price.
What other pair of engines did you drive on that same boat, that you liked better?

I have driven the same boat with with single 225 opti and 5.7 I/O.
It would 40 run mph. Period. With the 4 strokes.
I talked to another dealer that had a disgruntled customer with the exact set up that did the same. He was there to get answers why it was such a slug.
That is why I made that comment.
I am not interested in a debate.
Just my opinion.

Verados seemed to have been on a large percent of the boats I saw at the show, not bad for a new model.
