With the different trim/trailer systems I don't know. But if your engine trims up to trailer position then I don't think it's a problem. Some trims I guess use a second circuit/system for trailer. If it stops on trim then I would think that the wire is for trailer position.
I just spliced into the wires from the previous trim switch but I only had three wires.
