Hey all great site!

I just picked up a 10.5 Cougar Cub hull for the kids for $500 and need some info please..

Any one know the max recomended hp? most likely going to put a new 25 four stroke Merc on it

Are they safe, stable etc. how much do I need to worry?

Whats a tunnel hook and why would I want to take it out?

How high should I mount the motor?

Thanks!

is the max for that boat, they are relatively safe however you need to show good judgement as a parent. The boat is stable but NOT idiot proof. Teach your kids the basics and be sure they respect it. I would recommend no younger than 12 years old without an adult in the boat.

There have been several threads on little tunnels. I have one here from last year. My daughter has a 12' tunnel with fairly flat sponsons. I coulden't get a 40 Merc to work. The prop would cavitate horribly. If you lowered the motor till the prop bit, there would be so much water coming out of the tunnel hitting the midsection, that it would spray up the transom, hit the bottom of the cowl, and spray foreward all over your back.
Nick Partin was trying props on a small cat set-up. We never could get the small motors to work. I ended up putting a 90 hp Yamaha on my daughters boat and it's like day and night.

I noted in the other threads that I got to drive a 10' Cougar cub with a 20 hp Evinrude. It was one of the scariest rides I've ever been in. It was trying to lift but not quite. As you turned left, the hull rolled right. It rolled bad enough to throw me against the right side of the cockpit. I hope your hull acts better than the one I drove. Make sure it's stable for a childs first experience. If you scare them, You might lose their willingness to go boating.
For this reason alone, I started all three of my kids in 9' V bottoms.

I've yet to see a really good shot of it!

Put any paint on it yet?

Slikcraft, they pop up for sale in the UK and here from time to time, I'll keep my eye open for you, or you could check out www.boatsandoutboards.co.uk there was a hydrostream vector for sale on there too not so long ago in Holland.

HOLY CRAP BATMAN, 4000 pounds????? Thats insane. I paid 1500 CDN for one complete with an older 25 Johnson.

As for the original questions, not too stable, blows out in hard turns, hard to plane, wet, wet, very wet! Did I say WET ride. The tunnel spits back tons of water at you on anything but dead calm water. mine will run 30 to 32 mph with the 25. rebuilding it to handle more motor because the transom is a joke. Not a full transom but just a piece of crappy plywood in the engine mounting area only. Look closely where the tie up rings go thru the transom for signs of major rot. Stringers get bad and floatation foam in mine was waterlogged. 50 lbs of it! The deck wasn't exactly glassed on nor was the liner glassed in worth a dam.

I gave up dealin with the under 60 hp croud on the Aksano's I was trying to prop.. best I could do was take a 4 blade trophy sport and turn it into a cleaver. then it worked OK but would never transition and was a wet pouncy ride.. I wanted to and still do want to put a 115 on one of them 13' aksanos and someone is putting a 90 Etech on one that sold at the seattle show.. BUT the factory is rigging it and I KNOW that it is gunna be a dog the 90 Etech mid is to long.. boat needs a short shaft and a LWP and a raker or SRX to work at all. but so far best top spped I ever saw wasnt any better than an equally powered boston Whaler..

25 4 stroke is NOT a good idea for the cougar cub.. they dont have the propeller options to efectivly get it to work properly.. a late 80's 70 hp and a inline ETcut chopper would be about perfect and be fairly sane if respected.. otherwise find a 25 hp 2 stroke and a 18P chopper.. that will be a good kids toy with that set up..

It goes like a frickin raped ape!!! The hull is like 200#. If you trim it level and nail it, you'll almost flip it over backwards!!
There is soooooooo much power, if you nail it from just on step, it launches the hull out of the water. It's a total blast!!
These boats need POWER to perform.

Hey Nick,
She found BOYS last summer!! No time to take her boat out. She has shown interest to take it out this summer. Maybe take her boyfriend out for a ride..
with Dad running close by....if you know what I mean. LOL!!!

Don't you agree, that with all the prop combo's we tried,....these little cats just don't perform with sub 40 hp motors??
Yea, 90 hp is overkill but 40 hp is useless. Just my humble .02

hey ron, if she ends up not wanting the boat anymore, you can always just send it down here!

I had one too! (as my name implies:D ). It would be awesome for young children, but not really the greatest for adults. I had a 25hp merc, then put a 35 on her and saw only a bit of an increase in speed, and the little extra weight made it lean hard in the corners.

lett her deal with the BOYZ... they give her any crap just let her take them for a boat ride in that.... and let her bounce off a few breakers.. if they dont $hit themselves and run off on their own call me after you get done turning their face in to mush and Ill finish them off... and I agree on the sub 60 hp motors... not for cats.. 75 + or nothing... a older merc 65 4 cyl would work because it had the 15 spline shaft but any thing less is a waste..

emily needs a boy who can handle a girl that can drive a hotboat.. few are around in your area im sure.. so daddy better be on his toes...
