View Full Version : trailer air shocks

My trailers suspension seems to be too stiff for the load.
Considered putting shocks in and now thinking of air shocks.

If I relocate the leaf spring mount to soften the spring I would be guessing, the air shock would help here. This should allow dropping the trailer for shallow ramps.
Also allow raising the trailer to get the LU away from the ground.

Any problem with this idea?

 uh, the drop deal sounds like a plus, you would need an air supply to re fill, air bags are available for duelly pick ups, have seen in mags, air lift is a manufactuer. :( don't care bout muh spellin) air on big trucks is the deal, and my car trailer has it and you can't tell it's behind you goin over RR tracks and such, the little duellys use it on the lowered fullsize ones when a load mashes um down good they can air it back up! n keep on truckin!:D

I have used shocks on several of my trailers...most trailers have too much spring for the application, and to me the stiff ride on the trailer is harder on the boat than the ride in the water...I have removed the stiffer springs and installed shocks(without shocks the trailer will always bounce)...the soft spring/shock combo works great...the trailer never bounces and the shocks take all the shock from the road...I am going to put shocks on the trailer for the "Lil rex", because it will be light and see a lot of Hiway miles...I think the air shocks will do the raising and lowering thing U are looking for, but wit air in the shocks, U will still have the rough ride of the stiffer springs...Jus my 2 centz...REX:cool:

A simpler solution is to install torsion axles. They absorb and then rebound slowly acting like a shock. I found them about 6 years ago and have used nothing else since.

I hate to admitt Rex is right about anything - but - 99% of all small trailors are grossly overspringed. So be sure to select the right rating.

I have those "slipper" springs on my aluminum trailer. They're a single "leaf" that is real thick in the middle and doesn't use a shackle in the rear. Talk about CRUDE! They are so stiff the trailer frame itself flexes more than the spring!

The air shocks on my wagon are very stiff unless you put about 500-800lbs in the rear, but they are essential for leveling.
