Best lakes or riivers in Georgia/ Northern Florida
I am thinking about moving south for retirement in a few years and would like some input on the best lakes or rivers to live on in the Georgia or northern Florida area. Looking for something with year round water and fairly affordable property values. I want something where there are things to do on the water, bars, Restaurants, etc. Navigable water would be a plus. Thanks

Not terribly familiar with Georgia but in N. Florida the best waterway access is something on the St. Johns river. The area on either side of the river north of Lake George is still reasonable. If you are into bass fishing something on Crescent Lake around Crescent City is worth a look.
If you want to go a bit further south the area around Eustis / Leesburg / Mt. Dora is very nice with the Harris chain of lakes.Mark

I agree with Mark. The St. Johns river is incredible for the fact that you can run 150 miles in one direction, has several natural springs & meeting areas, and there are a few towns that boarder the river (the main ones starting from the South are Sanford, DeBary, DeLand, Astor, Palatka, St. Augustine, then Jacksonville and its Southern communities). There are waterfront condos with covered slips in Astor (half way between Ocala "I-75" and Ormond Beach "I-95") that can be bought for 200K.
For "things to do on the water", the Harris chain is great and the waterfront towns of Mt. Dora and Tavares do a great job of promoting several annual events. There are some inexpensive waterfront locations but to get a nice waterfront house is getting out of reach for the average guy.
The other thing that I would consider is summer temps in the middle of the state can be brutal without the the sea breeze that we get being on the far East side of the peninsula. I moved down here 13 years ago and knowing what I know now, the fact that I still have to work everyday and run a business, I would go just South of Jacksonville if I had to do it again with those perimeters. If business was taken out of the equation then it would be Astor for me.

Lake Seminole NW of Tallahassee. Run N to Eufaula, E to Bainbridge, S to Apalachicola. Apalachicola River and Flint River. Beautiful Country.

The only issue I have with Astor is the remoteness and the flooding. Lately I've been looking a lot at the St. Johns county area West of St. Augustine. The easy access to JAX as well as St. Augustine and both the Intercoastal and the St. Johns river make it ideal.
But that's really Lower Alabama..... (just kidding....)Mark

Thanks very much. I know I have read quite a few things on here about St Johns river. I might have to take the new boat for a small vacation this year and check things out.

There is no better river in the state of Florida than the Suwannee. Hell, they even wrote a song about the place.......

If you are retiring, consider no. georgia or e. tenn. many lakes that are clean & clear. We have halfbacks here. those are people that moved to florida, got burnt out, and moved half way back. I also love florida. i have family there, they all want to move here. I wish all of fla. was more like crystal or weeki wachee rivers. you can see what,s in the water. I used to ski in lake tarpon, st. johns, & suwanee rivers. I would never do that now. boat them all then decide.

Thanks for all the comebacks. As soon as I get the new boat, I plan on checking some of them out this summer.

Boat wakes aren’t that big a deal in and around Astor unless you are the one creating them. Flooding is a concern as it did flood badly this year but so did all of central Florida.
