never had a hydrostram but i had my sst 20 for about 10 years now. handle great in light chop but they are heavy. i would guess that with same power either hydro would be faster than the sleek but that is only my opinion.

I owned a 1988 SST20. Only thing about the boat that was great was the design, gelcoat work and interior. It was a hot looking boat. But, it was heavy and it did not like the rough water. It was a very rough ride compared to other tunnels such as Eliminator, Rapid Craft, STV, Mirage, etc.

look at the avitar i own one. They dont like rough water but are great starter boats cuz its almos impossible to get in trouble. they need alot of setback and arent a drag boat. once theyre up and flying theyre fun. you gotta learn to drive them to make em go fast.

I disagree about the rough water issue. Both of mine handled the rough water just fine. I had them both in some pretty nasty chop and never had an issue.

I've had two SSTs 84, 85 but both were new race boats 600 lb and 425 lb , at the light weight they were ok In ****ty water, although not no offshore racer.

Hopefully, I can add something here and attempt to sound like I know what I'm talking about.

The original 20' SleekCraft tunnel was the Aristocrat model and is characterized by the raised, top-most portion of the gunnel, built to accomodate a low windshield, like the one aircraftman owns. The older black hull in the byuboyz post is also an Aristocrat. Most of these were built in the mid- to late-seventies when the company, arguably in its glory, was run by Bruce Nescher in California.

Originally, the SST was also a Nescher boat. Designed a few years after the Aristocrat, the SST never had a windshield, nor the buttresses to accommodate it, so that's the major cosmetic difference between the two. The two boats shared the same bottom. The Aristocrat phased out of demand and the SST was eventually all that was sold. The SST's popularity was bolstered by some Mod-VP success. There are a number of lighter-weight SSTs out there that saw racecourse service.

The Aristocrat started out at 900-950 pounds dry, if I recall correctly. The basic SST (non-race), may have been 50 pounds lighter, but nothing appreciable.

In the years that ensued, SleekCraft was sold, moved to Arizona, and [blah-blah, insert lots of details that I know nothing about].

Fast-forward years later and the guy who owns the molds for the SST is Roy Lewis, who has been building them for years under contract with Carerra Boats. Roy is located just outside of Toronto.

Back to the original question: the Streams will be faster with similar horsepower. Waterrocket is looking for a starter boat and I can't think of a better one than the SST. It is safely fast and handles basic chop competently (although Brad is correct that Elims, Rapids, etc. are better; mind you, the SleekCraft hull design hasn't changed since the early 70's!). They are absolutely gorgeous and will get chicks faster than any Stream, in my opinion!

    Cheers,

    Tb

I talked to Bruce Nescher a few mo. before he died -- about 4 years ago. He sold the old Sleekcraft and started up a new co. and only made BIG boats like 26 ft and up -- He said that is where the $$$$$$$$ is at.-- Kim Howard was MVP champ around 83-84 in a SST --one SUPER NICE guy. He flipped his boat in a race and got hit by another boat. I think he ended up having his arm cut off.

    Talking SST

Beautiful boats, always thought they were the prettiest 20 footers out there.

I worked at a local Sleekcraft dealer in high school, and one of our mechanics raced SSTs. He did pretty well with the light weight comp hulls. he was using 2.6GTs and 2.4Bridgeports and was running 105-110 in race setup.

I have a 84 Comp hull that is in my garage. I love how it looks, but my RIOT is a better FAMILY tunnel...

may need to setup a webpage on the SST and see if anyone wants to restore my old warhorse. It has some history behind it, and I have spoken to Bruce Nescher, Candy Nescher, and others regarding the race hull and it's unique sponson/setback....

I will try to get the website up and running by Monday if anyone is interested.

    Ted Biglow

i have to disagree with the comment that the SST never had a windshield. My 1986 came with a windshield from the factory and my boat was also built by Nescher. They also did not have the same hull design through the years. there were a couple of different setbacks built into the transom as well as some had setback in the sponsons. there was a difference in the depth of the tunnels as well. thanks for the info on who holds the molds now. any idea what he is sell the SST 20 for now?
