And I understand that you had a very nice fishing trip. Perhaps you will win another this October.
Tell Doreen that Iris and I wish her the best at Westminster next month.

We had a great time...... Doreen and I relaxed and watched Serra work like a dog. We caught a nice Wahoo and nobody got sick or fell overboard. All in all a wonderful time on beautiful boat with great hosts......

Doreen and Tug are all set for Westminster and she appreciates your good wishes...

    Keep the faith ,.....

Just started reading this thread, and loving every page of it.
Although Mercury and its history doesn,t live here in the Netherlands like it does in the states, reading this thread almost makes me wish that i lived in Florida the sixties and seventies.
For me there,s just something mythical about Kiekhaefer and the whole lake x facility.
No other brand with such a rich history, and this thread is just a blast to read, keep up the good work.
    kind regards Peter

Even though I didn't work at Lake X or any Kiekhaefer facility, I worked at a Mercury dealer as a kid in the 60s and 70s. It was a different era and space in time. Back then we kids would kill to have a job in a marina or boat dealer just to be around these boats and motors. Worked long hours with no overtime and for about a dollar an hour and loved it. Sounds like the guys at Lake X and Sarasota worked hard, played hard and got paid little. But they had a chance to be around these boats and may also have got a chance to race that they may never have had a chance to do otherwise. And it was fun and is even more fun to look back on. To this day Mercurys are still in my life because of what happened in my youth. How did I survive?

    Gator versus a Dog!

    Lurking in the placid water
    Posing as a floating log
    A carnivorous navigator
    The gator got our dog!

Responding in detail to post #461
What I remember was approximately five to seven of us neighborhood kids were swimming in Lake X. When suddenly I heard a dog whimpering, and looking toward the crying sound, I saw Tricksey, our family beagle dog being repeatedly pulled beneath the water’s surface.

Tricksey was in the process of swimming across the adjacent canal, when suddenly; clamping jaws grabbed her in the middle of the canal. We kids shouted to our mothers, who then called the men in the boat shop. Roy Ridgell and some fellow co-workers (probably Wisconsin bachelors) came over and started searching for the reptilian submarine. In a hunting mode, Roy saw to it that the estimated seven to eight-foot dinosaur- relative, breathe it last breath. Later by boat the dog's floating corpse was retrieved from the canal.

Many years after this 1960s episode, I was informed that permission was given to take-out the nuisance gator, based on the potential threat and close proximity to the kids swimming beach area. Dad later told me that Charlie (the black, company maintenance/<VAR id=yiv1175409267yui-ie-cursor></VAR>yard worker) was given the gator tail to take home and eat. This is the only occurrence that I know of when an Alligator was shot and killed at Lake X. I am confident Jaw's was exterminated out of the responsibility for a safe beach environment. As many of us know, Mr. K policy was to preserve the Lake X property as a wildlife sanctuary.

The above mention canal was west of the trailer-housing compound. Subsequent to this jaw's incident the dirt canal has been given a cemented uplift. This is now the sea-walled canal that is entrance to the newer shop and boat slip, which accommodates the larger offshore boats.
