Im going to say this on the safety side of the discussion.
Ive seen more recreational boating accidents since becoming part of this community than I had ever heard of and they were all caused by either reckless behavior (usually alcohol) or complacency. Ive had other member pull up along side me at 90mph at arms length and then get bent when I told them to give me space. As dangerous as pushing the envelope is, its probably not the most likely thing to get any of us hurt in a boat.13' Biel tunnel AKA "Flight Risk"

depends on what type of boat your talkin.... thats a trick question.... lol if we were strictly talking tunnel hulls under 15 ft id have to say u... but if we are talking aluminum turds... well now i might get some play... STV... id have to say it used to be michael Dixon so as u can see thats a loaded question... LOL kinda curious who really does own the fastest OB powered boat... id expect u would need to be in the upper 140's or so to hold it... unless the STV's that posted the 135-145 mph runs are no longer together... and dixons 151 iirc the boat came apart and was sold after that... but who knows... someone may have had the guts to buy it all and put it together again the way he had it

Glad to see the interest being generated in top end again. Be interesting to see who all gets into it and what the speeds are to come.

Theres a bunch of different setups going really fast these days. Props have come a long way and motors are making more power allowing boats designed in the 70s/80s to go faster then some owners want to drive them. 120 ten years ago was ground breaking in a river boat. These days I know a bunch of pump gas river boats (not high strung race/drag motors on spray) that will go well into the 120s. 130s is the new 120 . Brent, Dave, jperog, Adam, Gordon, Capt doug metko, Andy, in no particular order are some of the fastest river boats I can think of around here.
Wheres deeznuts when u need him? Hes always got something up his sleeve

It will be interesting to see what kind of performance guys get out of the new billet motors that are available now. I'd love to see somebody rig a new billet powerhead/12" mid/ssm gearcase on a mod vp and see what it does. Hell, if I had a bunch of money to throw away, I'd love to mount quad billet 2.5s on my converted 30 Skater and let it rip! The entire setup wouldn't weigh much more than the twin 400Rs that I'm going to hang off the transom, but I'd have 1,200+ HP instead of 800!

I understand power to weight is the ticket in a drag race, but what about on top end? Will a 600lb hull go just as fast as a 400lb hull with the same power? I am guessing that the heavier boat would be less likely to blow over, and thus safer at speed. What do you think?

Not that I have been much over 120. But I'd much rather a 700 lb boat than a 500 lb boat to fast. Baja200merc, back in the 90's we were radar gun junkies chasing top end. 120 wasn't that hard to get, the bottom/gear case / motors haven't changed much. Best I saw was back then was 127 (not me) in 2002.

The heavier boat would give more confidence/stability to stay in it longer for sure.

Sure there are plenty like you guys, I think there was a pic of dennis vitolo had a new pro comp ran 120+ way back when. Point is 120 then wasnt as common as it is these days. Just props alone must make it easier today then it was then.
Teens seem to be the going rate for lake boats not some top end setup. Im talking lake boats are used every weekend with 4 seats, big stereo that do 100 mile river runs with the whole family to go to lunch not light drag motors on mod vp. THese days those same boats have near 400hp on them on pump fuel and all of the tunnel boats have been into the mid 30s some 40s (supposedly) with sportmasters.
As for the weight, I thought Dixon said the 151 boat was 750+lbs and he would never try it with his 480lb "casper". Andy driver is on our lake all the time with his carbon River rocket its under 400lbs and runs 117 with a 200xs but he says the heavier boats make much better lake boats. Ive driven my brothers 400lb mirage 100+ and a 450lb t3 around 110 and you can tell they are light. My t3 is 530ish ive been 114 but a heavier boat would have to feel more planted even if it takes a bit longer to get there.

I used to own the 151 boat, it is a 600 something pounds
don't recall the year. At the rumble one of my
boats ran 125 with 4 seats on pump gas lake ridden every weekend. Instigator will know
what year. It wasn't good conditions either. Problem I see now it hp and props are better than the hulls2023 TUFF 25
