if the other yahoos want to challenge you, take them into some chop and see what happens! checkmates are a well built boat, and like gary said, every boat has its purpose! enjoy it, and you could always add more hp!! thats always a good solution

Good example of what we're.....
talking about could be seen at the last River Ranch.
Lot's of fly weight 100+ MPH boats there and most spent the day on the protected river.
When one of the groups decided to go to hang out on the far side of the 25 mile, un protected Lake Kissimee almost all of the "fast" boats loaded on tralers and towed there to play in the protected river. They did that for a few hrs and then re-loaded and went back (by trailer) where we all started from.
Wonder who had more fun, the "fast" guys or the "lake" guys ? Again, it's all relative.
Something else to consider is most of the "fast" guys have other boats where as a lot of the "lake" guys only have one which makes a big difference in what you chose.
Quinten, I looked at your boat at RR but not close enough. Thats a rare bird and I'd like to check it out again a little closer. It's not for sale is itI'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.
I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.

They say everything is for sale for the right price. I'll be at the next RR, and would look forward to having a little time to chat. Nothing wrong with talking about boats
I've really had no chance to do much about set up on this boat, but I think 73.2 was all I cared to hold on for. I need lwp, seat time with the hydraulic steering and a different wheel. Of course, if money were no object, you would see some more hp on there as well.Last edited by Quinten; 01-18-2009 at 08:36 AM. Reason: can't spell before coffee!

About the Minx---Well looking over the spec's on the boat , the materials they use are very good, much better than the original.
I have not seen or heard of one of these before so I know nothing of them personally , but the design is over 30 years old so I see no splashing laws apply.
In 1978 I bought my first NEW boat and this was it, It replaced my 75 Viper, but to be honest with you I was very unhappy because It rode the rough water no better than my Viper , so I bought a new 1979 Venus the next year and was VERY happy.Last edited by CUDA; 01-18-2009 at 09:31 AM.

Gary your on a tear Buddy and I got your back one this...so many people think big #'s and I guess thats ok But how often would you do it even if the days where perfect...it's nice now because we can pull info from the ECU's and it's funny how the % of WOT is very small yet cruz speed RPM is where the most time is at
And if you don't think 50,60, or 70 is fast please feel free to open the door and get out at anytime

Mates
Love the CKMATES. Would love to have a 15 or 16 with an inline to play with. Have a Pulse 185 BR with 175 2.5 and love the boat. I guess the STV with 280 will never happen (Kids in College) but I sure would like to try one on for size for a while. Still wish I would have bought that Vector you redid Gary. You had 4 or 5 times what you got for it in it and it was perfect. Good thread. Smitty

Gary- you forgot to mention a big CM victory. Benny Robertson/ Bill Combs won the Havasu Classic VP class in 77 or 78 (21' Enchanter w/ a 235 OMC).

Yep, and.....
so many people are only aware of todays 2.5's, STV's, Alli's , Mirages etc and don't realise where it all began and what it took to get us here.
Race conditions are one thng but take me to any lake USA on a Sunday afternoon and show me what you can do.
I was snooping on the Checkmate board the other day looking at the old race pix's and 1/2 the boats are 3' in the air
Thats closer to the water I'm used to seeing than what it takes to see 80+ in a todays hot rods.
Hottrucks, very well said.
Smitty, that boat was balanced very, very well and did way better in chop than what I expected. Was like a tunnel though in that you had to get it up and flying to do it and not many would ride with me while doing it.
Most preferred riding in the larger boats running beside me so they could watch

Well , Lets just say there are better suited boats for going faster . But with that being said , there was a 16' Baja around for years that passed me on more them one occasion . I'm not familar with the exact model checkmate your dealing with ,but there have been many fast ones back in the day ,and even weight can be overcome with Hp.
Just remember , If you do deside to over power this boat . Be sure to use all the latest and best equipment available . And Use Your Safety Gear !!!

Instigator ..........
Well put Gary !!!
I'm no expert, but I know I'm doing 70 all day long in an 84 21' Enchanter - 225 Merc / Hydro jack plate w/ 24 chopper As I've read here before, with a Checkmate you can take everybody out skiing and tubing all day, drop them off at the dock and then go scream and fly !!!
IMHO Checkmates are a great all around boat - don't get me wrong, I think the Streams are a great boat as well, there's a guy here thats got a beautiful HST - very sharp and 100+ .... I just love my Checkmates !!!
