How high is a surface prop to be a surface prop?
How far out of the water does a prop need to be - to be called a surface prop?Is 1inch of the blade at the top out of the water a surface prop? or does the exhaust hub have to be exposed to the surface?
Just interested as people only talk about the prop height to the bottom of the hull - not the acutally depth of the prop (although they're kinda linked... )
So if I was to buy a clever, how high would the clever need to be out of the water? Is this generally considered with set-ups?

Generally, if the tips of the blades pierce the surface of the water, it's considered a surfacing application.
How high you run a prop depends entirely on the boat and application.

That's kinda hard to answer. It really depends on your boat and what your goals are. It will also depend on set back and weather your transom is notched. In general most cleavers work best with about half the prop out of the water. My Viper/XS with the 2:1 gearcase runs with the prop shaft 1/2 above the bottom with a 14X30 high rake cleaver.

Dave, what kind of RPM do you get with a 30 pitch?

6100 on a nice cool day. The prop is a real thin work Seebold built to push this light load. It holds with the shaft a full inch above the bottom but I can't get any more rrrrrr's up that high so I haven't ran it higher for a while now. It trys walkin sideways if ya ain't careful.

The prop that I run most of the time is a old worked 14X28 VC cleaver If I lean on it the motor will turn kinda tite but most of the hot weather it stays on a 35 acre lake anyway so the 14X28 gets me down to the end of the lake a little quicker. forgot to say that I drop the engine down alittle to run the 14X28, It makes it a little easier to get on a plane.

crazy horse, do you have low water pick ups? I'd be kinda crazy to try heights like that without them right? How much do you guys expect the water to rise after it leaves the pad? If I look at my water pickups, they're above the pad, but I still see water coming from the telltale. I'm only going 60mph, so lwp's seem stupid for now.
Walking a fine line, and enjoying the view
