I never met Ron, but I was good friends with his father Ted, through Skip Talbot. Ron built him the first drag outboard to go over 100 mph. A great man in our world of boat racing.

Butch: Yes, Ken Baker was first over 100 in the quarter in 1965, Skip had a 97 in his Westbrook dual engine rig in early 1966, Then Skip got his Ron Jones boat "Valkyrie" late 1966 and up'd the record to 106 and by late 1967 had recorded a 118 mph. All of the top outboards running in drag racing during those years were Ron Jones hydros.

Hill's Hallett
Jackie, I found a picture of the Hallett from Powerboat. Ron Hill ran it at Parker and Havasu in 1970. I'm guessing he ran a 20' Jones at Havasu in 1971, maybe John Schubert can confirm that?
Just checked on the "Tricks" thread and saw that Bob V gave you several much better pictures yesterday. Didn't realize that I was a day late and a dollar short ..... again!Last edited by willabee; 04-28-2017 at 09:16 AM.

Direct from Ron Hill:
I ran the Hallett at Havasu, the year Scotti won. I ran the Jones the year Joe FIelder stuffed on the first lap. I ran the 16 foot SCOTTI IN 1971 AND LASTED AN HOUR, BEFORE i MANAGED TO BLOW IT OVER.
Also from Ron:
Havasu was very good to me in 1967, I won like $8,500 IN CASH, when I made $6,800 a year teaching school and a lot worth $4,500 that I later sold for $9,000 and carried the paper for ten years.

Ron, looks to me like the HALLETT lost its rear cowl ? . Whilst that's a better picture than anything I've seen previously, would be nice to see a couple of views from different angles, you got anything?
Scotti also won a lakeside plot-------he offered it to Don Ross and myself for $500 cash if we bought it there and then---------he might just as well have asked for a million back then.

Ron, I have to tell you, ----STOP ACTING SO BLOODY ROUND SHOULDERED, both S&F and Facts Forum are bloody good sites -------in a nutshell -------one's OMC ------the others Mercury !
Weren't we all just drivers ? Regardless of creed or colour.
GG preached an intense hatred of EVERYTHING OMC, until he got offered the big bucks to switch camps--------suddenly OMC poo-poo didn't stink any more!
Me myself have never had an issue with any OMC driver, in fact, a hell of a lot of them are lifetime friends.
Yes I do read both sites--------in fact, if it hadn't been for young Thipedaux I may never have known about S&F!
So broaden your horizon Ron !

Hallett .....
He also ran the Hallett at Parker,1970. He posted this picture of him and Johnny Sanders from that race.
I asked Ron if that was Scotti's 1969 Havasu winning Molinari that Sanders was driving. He said it was and he remembers it was slow. He said OMC put Johnny in that boat with the same set of props it ran at Havasu, 17 pitch. He said that the other OMC twins were running 19's and 21's at Parker that year. He felt the 17's were good on the 4 mile course which was "rough as hell", but not the right choice for a relatively calm 13 mile course.Last edited by willabee; 10-17-2017 at 03:19 PM.

The what if's & maybes .....
I checked Powerboat, this 1969 Havasu winning Molinari finished 4th at Parker in 1970. Don't know if it was on the same lap as the first three finishers, but 4th is pretty damn respectable!
What I think this means is this design, very similar to the 1970 Havasu winner really got over bad water well. Scotti probably had good acceleration in the 70/90 range and could get over more water at speed than most other boats at Havasu and that was the key to his win. At Parker the same setup ran short on top end and didn't get the rough water advantage because the river was much calmer than Havasu.
The 1970 Havasu winning Molinari finished 3rd in 69. Speedmasters would have given it another 8/10 mph, but it would have had to give up those big BP blades that really gave that boat rough water stability. Scotti's boat was an improvement on this boat and probably still gets the win.
However, the dude that built those boats built a brand new boat for himself for Havasu 1969. Renato was very well aware of what Scotti and Sirois are bringing to the party. He built a boat that ran faster than these two boats and still used the big BP blades. Could he have gotten over the water at speed as well? I don't know .....
About all we do know is that around the five hour mark at 1970 Parker, Sirois had Renato's Havasu boat in 1st place! I think the 1969 Havasu outcome would have been a little different if Renato didn't blow over testing ..... maybe?
The three boats from 1969 .....

Lotsa history---Lotsa memories Bill--
Parker 70--first big race after Mr. K. retired--
Mercury had an embarassment with the BP units at Havasu a few months earlier
Mercury had and embarassment with the SSM at Parker-
I'm sure this was Bill Seebold's first factory ride
Renato's reverse 'S' boat had a SAD ending--

Lotsa good memories ....
Oh ya, Parker 68, 69 & 70 ..... they were the best ones. All that wild and crazy inboard stuff, all types of multi engine outboard stuff trying to break the hold the inboards had on Parker's 1st place trophy and more Wing boats in one place than you would dare imagine. Those races were truly 'events', lots of noise, color, people and exhaust fumes ..... you can't beat that.
Always a threat to win .....
Probably the best Switzer Wing OMC had, a mean machine ......
and then we had the guys that just couldn't seem to get the hang of when to use the flap ....
Oh ya, lotsa great memories .....Last edited by willabee; 10-23-2017 at 03:07 PM.
