    I think molli and herring were already at OMC before the V8 molinari would have won the world OZ at chase if not for that spectacular crash in the opening heat running omc ccc's against the T4 mercury's
    and you in the cosworth.

    There you go again with the KIPLING word IF. ---------every boat driver in the world would have been world champion IF ONLY. The ccc didn't score much against the T2'S 3'S. And i can't recall one single success against the T4. If i'm wrong -----tell me about it.

    LAKE X TESTING, 1970.....con't

    Got a couple of shots of Broadway Joe Habay, a HVAC man from Yipsilanti, Michigan. I first met Joe at the Chicago to Milwaukee marathon around 1967, he was driving a twin OMC Souter. Next time was in Oshkosh, the following year. Garbrecht had asked him to join the Merc program, and we had a new Switzer V (I think the class was JJ) rigged with a pair of 1250 BP's for him to test.

    I remember trying to run that boat. You would mash the throttle and it would plane in a heartbeat. It was fine as it picked up speed, but then it would start to walk. No matter what I did, I couldn't get it to settle down and would have to back off to get it going straight again. A couple of others also tried to run it but got the same result.....none of us could make it to the first bridge without getting out of the throttle. Joe arrived, looked it over, got in and hit the throttle. He never backed off, went threw the open bridge that we couldn't even get to and disappeared out of sight! He later told me the secret was to keep your hands in a fixed position and let the wheel walk back and forth to them....the boat then goes straight. Later Joe was hired and moved to La Habra, Ca. to rig and test boats being built by Ron Jones for Mercury.

    Forgive me for jumping in here but, weren't the CCC and Mercury's T4 in a totally different time period? Reason I ask is because I knew this old man who raced for Mercury as a team driver with the T4 and there were no CCC's then it was the V8 carb motor.

    Thanks for the memory Sam, ALL those "little grey cells" of yours are working just fine, afraid some of mine have gone white. And of course i've still got the runaway mouth which gets me into a lot of tight corners. JW.

    I'm confused, dad raced the T4 in 84... We moved to Winter Haven and dad went to work for Second Effort for the 85 season and was one of the first to race the EFI V8.

    I raced T-4 Powerheads in the Key West Offshore Worlds in 1981 and the engine had been around for a few years at that time. As a matter of fact as I recall there were only three powerheads available, 2 and a spare. The supply was so lean that when Sirois wanted a set of three for his "Popeyes" Maelstrom Cat the following year we shipped them to New Orleans. I can't imagine what engines Ron T was running in 1984 as I thought the project had been discontinued well before that......?

    There was 3 boats running them out of the Mercury Factory racing against the OMC"S. Billy Seebold, Gene Thibodaux and Buck Thorton. That was the season Gene was sent over the pond to drive the big OMC and then went to work for them in 85.

    I apologize. I mixed up your dad's name with Ron Thibodaux, the offshore photographer. At my age names and phone numbers are the biggest challenge.

    Back to the topic. I recall the T4's coming on the race course in 1978 or so. So, if your dad raced them in 84, that would have been the 6th year for that program. I honestly think it had been scrapped well before that. Was there a "Part 2" to the effort spurred on by OMC's V-8's? I was out of the tunnel boats completely after 1979-80, and became totally involved with the Offshore stuff, but we stayed close to the Oshkosh guys right through the 80's. I recall a lot of conversations around T-3 projects but very few about T-4's after our 1981 project.

    Ok, just called dad. 1983 Mercury built some new T4's with real EFI and not the bendix fuel injection like on the old T4's. Three of them were built for dad, Billy and Buck to run with the V8's but never got to race because when they showed up at Chattanooga they got escorted out of the pits by the police. All the testing and development was done at a private test lake in Jim Merten's back yard for these engines. The crankshafts couldn't take the rpm and didn't hold up very well.

    Mercury also built and tested a 2 speed shifting gearcase for the new T4 but never raced it due to an fatal accident that I was just told NOT to post any info about.

    I guess thats where I was lost because I just knew they were running the T4. I had no idea they were a rebirth so to speak of the engine, just new they were new at the time and we stayed in a hotel for what seemed like months while dad was at Mercury testing and getting ready to race. Sucks they never raced it but apparently it wouldn't live for 50 laps anyway because dad said he blew his 2 powerheads and 1 of Billy's testing.
