Thanks for thinking of me. First time Cees left Merc for big Johnson was 1975 (first picture) and went on the win the ON World Championship race in Cardiff later same year using a brand new 2 liter Johnson Stinger GP V6 looper. (Next two pictures).

I'm going to keep digging, the answer is out there someplace.
Cees must have returned to Merc power in the later 70's because if I remember in around 1978(?) Merc were using Velden's in Europe and Seebolds in North America.
If I had time to look I know I could find a picture of Seebold driving a Velden #7 - maybe at Bristol.

Back to #998 - sure looks like Cees Van Der Velden's name on the rear cowling. Thinking out loud maybe Merc put the number on for practice sessions and just to create a BUZZ. Garbrecht was still race manager then - is that something he would have done ???I could ask Mark Rotharmel if he remembers, he would have been there and his memory for details is excellent.

Cees last race with a Johnson OZ was Bristol in june 1976 and I think he was back driving for Mercury by the Amsterdam race which was around august 1976 I believe the Seebold boats from 1977 on were the same as Veldens apart from the front and rear cowls it saved Mercury on shipping costs.I am sure Cees was back with OMC in 1979 and his boats did change a little from Seebolds after that I am going to guess that picture in the USA would be from 1978.

Seebold got back to me and said the pic is from 77 or 78. He said he is pretty sure the boat is the one he drove at the one and only race held in Branson, Mo. Said Cees is driving it at this race and has absolutely no idea why it carries Bill Sirois' number.

I called Boob Hetzel to see if he could offer any help. He said that he, Jim Schuenke and Mike Butler had been talking about this a week or so ago and that Butler told them the reason for the number. Unfortunately, Butler is on vacation out west and won't be back for a couple of weeks and my buddy Boob has, of course, forgotten what Butler said ..... unbelievable!!!!! I asked him to have Butler post the answer when he gets back.

I remember that there was a deal for Seebold's in the US and Veldon's in Europe, same hull design. Not only saved shipping expense, but also made info learned testing in the US immediately transferable to the boats in Europe which saved one hell of a lot of test time for those guys.

,,,,, and the beat goes on, ya the beat goes on .....

Mark says it was 1978 and Seebold and Cees had identical black & silver boats that started right beside each other.

Soooo...why the # 998. Hope Butler remembers and maybe checks this website while away.

We all know Bill Seebold in Noth America was # 190, but I don't remember Cees having a racing number that was always associated with him. Havasu 1972 I think he was # 139 (while he was leading !!).

In the meantime let's be creative and speculate !!!

Yes, Cees was back racing Merc in Amsterdam (the race was late that year) and Paris 1976, but raced a Johnson OZ class V6 in the St. Louis race and a 2 liter Johnson V6 looper in ON World Auronzo, Italy 1976.

Please tell Mark thank you for that info. Now we just have to wait on Butler's return.

You are right about Cees at Havasu in 1972. He was given one of the white 17'ers that ran so well over any water (Hering's ride before he got the pickle fork) and he used Duey Berghauer's number. Duey was teamed with his brother Denny in another of those white Molinari's and they used #138 for the race.

Cees finished the four hours on Saturday in first place. He lost almost a lap on a late start Sunday, but drove back to lead after the first hour. It was during the second hour on Sunday that he performed his acrobats for the fans.

    Cees .....

Cees van der Velden was back to OMC and Johnson racing for the 1979 season.
Here he is in the #3 Velden/ Beneteau/Johnson V6 RS 3 liter looper with fuel injection early 1979.

That was my favorite St Louis race.....Cees was the only OMC that could get off the beach quickly.... OMC ran methanol and Merc countered with Nitrous. The Merc boats were stupid fast and cocked sideways on the straights due to the amazing power boost... Cees got into turn one in one of the heats and got sandwiched by Earl...Cees boat launched straight up and luckily hit no other boat on landing but was badly damaged. I always wondered if it was Earl's job to shadow Cees and keep him corralled.....If so Earl did a damn good job in that corner. Cees came out of the rescue boat with that steely determined look on his face that made him so successful and competitive. My respect for him after that endures to this day...
