You can order a complete powerhead (280 or Drag), midsection, and lower unit. There's your complete outboard.

You can order any cowl you want from Mercury. Those are available too. All parts for those engines will be available for a long time.

Seems to me white/black/silvers go with any color boat. I think colored motors are cool myself. I think they should offer colored trim panels on a motor and/or paintable ones, then you could choose to leave it or make it match or contrast your boat color. They could offer common black/silver/green/red/yellow/etc. or paint your own custom color, then the rest of the motor would be the color they usually are. It would be easy to paint/change out the panels if you didn't have to screw with masking it all off and the stickers, or you could leave it as is.
In fact if they put some thought into it they could make the panels cover wear spots so replacing them would mostly refurbish the cowl. Could even make custom ones that said (say for Merc) "Mercury Racing", "Mercury XS", maybe zebra stripes or whatever if you wanted that. Even different style lines in them might be applicable. Of course they would have to not charge a million dollars for a cheezy plastic panel, and it would need to be light but that should be easy to do. Could also reduce cowl costs by not having to finish them under the panels.
I'm ignoring you Greg. It was overcast but nice today...the calm before the storm.

The lower price must be do to the new "modular pricing" scheme that High Performance is coming out with......price does not include lower unit or cowling, or oil tank and other "required" rigging items. !
(actually, it would be kind of a neat program...order just what you need. I'll take a dressed 300XS powerhead and cowling....I've already got all the rest of the stuff)
