"SECRETS OF TUNNEL BOAT DESIGN", a must read!

Thank You Jim Russell, just got my new edition today. Replaces a 15 yr old version I just found.
Jim, the new version has a bit more depth to it. I was blown away by the racing and design history in your book too.
Was intrigued by the patents for bottom designs from Darris Allison (for a mod vee!!) and Howard Pipkorn.
Some killer racing shots from way back as well.
Recognized several of my buds in the book as well. I believe the picture of Ken Warbys boat taken outside is from Rumble on the River #1, AnthonySS in a STV @ warp speed in a bucket and vest (of course), JohnMarles in his scary Silver Wing and many, many more.
Jim must be an old coot like me cause in his old racing pix's he's wearing a Gentex jacket (same as I wore )which has been extinict since the advent of elctricity
This is not a slide rule, chalk board, design geek kinda book like I thoought I remembered but is more of a "How To", to go fast in an O/B.
Besides bottom design, Jim covers props, lower units (including modifications and options, etc, etc.
Very, very educational!! (and I've only thumbed through it!)
Here's a link to Jim's website and info on his other books and projects.
    http://www.aeromarineresearch.com/stbd2.html
Well worth the investment guys if you want to see how we got where we are today or to learn what is possible with what you have and help you know what to expect from a tunnel before owning one. Great info in regards to the recent post about tunnel Vs Vee bottom performance too.

So that's where you get the secrets?!

    Duuuude,

I finished putting the Vindicator's powerhead on....got the wiring and carbs all tight, emptied 35 gallons of gas, got new gas (ouch) added oil, ready for the first hour of idle-time, went to the ramp, started to rain (w/ 48 degree's of air blasting me at 15 mph) went to start it and after a couple of cranks, yup, something I forgot .... no battery juice.

I've got the battery on trickle.....

Hydraulic steering is 1/2 way in the Stream. The removal was a pain, cut the cable that was frozen and saved the other (why I don't know).

Now I'll need to get this book. (I've been on the fence so long I am spitting splinters). The YT hull is not the best thing in the world, well, maybe it will help with skiing. As soon as the cash flow begins to reflow....I'll do an order. The updates are cool.

Haven't forgotten about you. Looks like I can swap the counter rotating lower for a RH so I might be on the way to a repower.......again, once the reflowage thing happens.
    Sea ya, Sleekster

    Tunnel Boat Design

Gary - thankyou very much for the kind words about my book.

Since your original version, we're now up to the 12th edition STBD in publication, and yes, there are many additions/updates to the book. I've tried to include enough information for a widely varying reader interest - from racing and design history; to specifics of vee hull and tunnel hull design concepts, performance calculations and formulae. I've always found the history of performance hull design intriguing, so we've tried to cover it well in the book. It is primarily intended to be, as you suggest Gary, a "How to go fast" outline that also explains "why things are what they are".

I am just now finishing a major update to my "Secrets of Propeller Design" book, which will be published this summer.

I didn't know that my good 'ol Gentex racing jacket would be a tip-off that I'm (approaching) an old coot! Guess I've just been at it a long time!

Thanks again for the kind words, Gary.

Gary is right on - The Secrets Of Tunnel Boat Design is a must read manual for any performance boater. It's a very interesting read, and I've been through my copy many, many times. It's the kind of book you can read through 10 times, and still come back for more.

Jim will also be writing some feature articles for us, and we'll be posting an update review of the latest version of his Tunnel Boat Design Program.

My evaluation of the 12th Edition is here.
