The trucks with the raised roof were referred to as the "Organ Trucks". They were supplied by Kiekhaefer for the Tommy Bartlett Ski Shows. When the trucks were in Florida at the boat races Johnny Young was the organist.

The trucks were not to be driven on the highway at speeds over 45MPH as ordered by E.C.Kiekhaefer. The trucks were quite top heavy and not much fun to drive. When they were on site the roofs were unlatched and the roof and the platform below with the organ attached were raised
approximately another 6' above the truck.

I remember back in 1960 when one of the trucks was used at a Mercury dealer meeting in Chatanooga, TN. A local musician was hired to play for the meeting. Not realizing that Elmer Carl Kiekhaefer hated his first name, the organist decided to play a popular tune of the day called "Elmer's Tune". Needless to say when Carl heard that the organist was immediately dismissed!

Another interesting story could come from Odell Lewis who drove one of the trucks to Sarasota from Lake X. Seems Odell was in a hurry to get home and lost the roof somewhere between Lake X and Sarasota. I never heard how he explained that one.

My brother hand built a fully functional 1/12 scale RC version of the X-112. I don't know if he still has it.

It's hard to believe he took time out to design this for Kiekhaefer

Only a couple of regrets with OFF 2009.......
But I had given the photo of the 7000 Switzer Wing to have put on the sign in board, with instructions to make sure that boat was on the sign in boad,,,,
Obviously with the high priced help I hired, it didn"t make it , But that has always been one of my favorite photos,,,,,,,,
Oh well, you get what you pay for????????

    Jim

That is THE most beautiful Wing picture ever..Bob Switzer told me he has it as his PC desktop picture..as I did..I wonder if Dave was chomping on his cigar in it.
Jim, you did great, damn the help..I don't think anybody would have seen it anyway..When I got there I saw Bonnie Wolff first, first time in about 45 years, then John Bakos, first time in about 15-20 years, then Gene Wagner, and it went on from there..If that picture had been there, I would have missed it..

    Outstanding job...Thanks...

    Hi Bobby:

Since I only pay attention to the race OB's any more, I checked on this for you with my buddy, Joe Imprescia, a World champion boat racer, a Merc outboard dealer, and an outboard guru. Here's what he says:

The 150 is a 2.5 liter engine and is slightly less stressed then the 200 3.0 liter. Neither motor is a "great" engine, but they will give you good durability for the first 3-5 years depending on use. In 07 and 08 Mercury was throwing in 1 and 2 year warranty extensions to stimulate sales. There are no specific problems attached to the 07 motors.

    Hope this helps.....
