Buying or selling a chopper prop?Read This.

Repeatedly I keep seeing people who either just don't know or else they are misrepresenting the prop they're selling. A chopper prop is a "model" only made by Mercury Marine and not just any round ear prop. The term "chopper" comes from the weed cutters or "choppers" on the front of the blades near the hub. These were designed to cut away weeds on bass boats in heavy cover. A round ear prop unless made by Mercury Marine with the weed cutters is not a "CHOPPER PROP" You will see some modified choppers with the weed cutters removed but again unless the prop was made as a chopper from Mercury Maruine it is not a chopper but simply a round ear configuration and should not be confused with a true chopper prop.

    Too late,
    Hand me a "kleenex"
    Make a "Xerox"
    Go get a coke

Chopper is now just about any round eared over hub exhaust prop.

Noah, I bought a boat yesterday that has a prop on it with the following numbers 48 76108 A5 it also has Tillman's stamped between each blade, I called merc and they say it's no longer available, another prop repair shop said it's a chopper that's been worked by Tillman, any info on this by the numbers above?

what about chopper II's? No weed cutters from the factory.

    GOOD FIND CHAD...THANKS,

Also if I recall some of the Merc Catalogs where good at defining The names that were registered trademarks of Brunswick Corp ...I believe Chopper was one of them. Others where like ...Jet Prop, Perma Gap, Thunderbolt, etc, etc.

So what do you call your choppers?

When I think of choppers, I don't think Mercury, I think round ear overhub prop. What about the cleaver prop? Is that a Mercury term also?

    old mercs

I think that the early choppers didn't have weed cutters but were still called choppers. It's a Merc prop but no weed cutters I can post a pix and # you tell me what it is.????

    DAMM

It Noah Ya got me to walk to the shop for this. I just checked my bunch of choppers and I got some ###....48-75772-A4 has weedcutters, 48-75772-24 which I have had for YEARS don't. I just assume that any round ear 3 blade high rake round SS overhub rubber clutch prop is a chopper. As long as it has the Merc part ###.

Dave, your prop is a 24p small-ear chopper. It must have had the cutters when it was new, but somebody cut them off and blended it in. Most of the time they run better without them.

Check out the link I posted above.

    Prop Spinners

Yes the chart you posted shows props with weed cutters, but I have 2 props that have no sufficks ## after the pitch # that have no weed cutters. I think my loose discription of what a chopper is should cover the issue. Mercury part #, 3blade,round ear, rubber hub, over prop, high rake, and good preformance. Whether it has weed cutters or no is not going to clarify if it's a chopper as some don't have weed cutters. From the factory or modifyed. I am sure Noah had good reason to start this post, I have not watched what props people are trying to sell as choppers. Maybe people are selling props as chopper that are not, but I know the difference. Anyway my most liked prop is a cheep one.
