Parker,

Just pull the cowling off of a late model 4 cylinder 50hp Merc (Classic 50 for example) and take a look. Not much special about the 44XS powerhead. Same goes for the 25XS.

For some classes we take Mercs that were built in the '50's, modify them a little (open exhaust and porting), and then wind 'em up tight. Re-ring 'em every now and then and occasionally replace a seal in an end cap is about all the maintenance required.

Mercury has a new A/J motor for around $2000.00.I know they ran good in J.

The A/J motor is a Merc, but it is not made by Merc. As far as I know you MUST be an APBA member to get a new A/J motor or the parts to make a Merc 15 into a legal racer.

I know this is an old conversation but in the next several days I will be listing my fathers New in the crate Mercury 10XS on e-bay. You can see some pics I posted earlier on Hydro Racer. Dad had 4 of these before he passed and I have 2 left to sell.
