    Bendix stuck???

I have a 1983 40hp Merc outboard and when I turn the key, the bendix is not popping up to engage the flywheel. Any ideas? I can turn the key and have my buddy knock the side of the motor and it fixes the problem. Problem is I can't go out alone. LOL I greatly appreciate any help

Sound like the starter brushes are going. The starter drive will not go up if the starter is not turning fast enough. Tapping the starter seats the brushes and away it goes.
WARNING: Stop tapping on the starter or you will break the magnets inside. At this point you MAY be able to just change the brushes and bushings, but if you break the magnets a new starter motor is in order.

    Chris,
Thanks for the quick follow up. I'm guessing its time to carry her to the doctor I am not tapping on the starter, but the actually housing of the motor. It may be doing the same as if I am tappiing on the starter, but not sure. What kind of cost (ballpark) am I looking at.

Not spinnin fast enough or not at all, tap it, it goes. I'm still going with brushes.
    Call RickRacer, 407-343-4733.
I see the repair kit is listed but not priced. Looks like the starter is Arco#5366 and the kit is SR366.
Tell Barb you found out about them on Scream and Fly, you'll get a discount.
I just bought a starter from them last week. Good price, good service.
