The boat pictured was Marty's first tunnel (APBA Class SJ). A 16' Checkmate in green metal flake and black mist named the "Irish Express" with either a 135 or 140 hp. When first raced in the APBA Nationals 1972 at the Miami Marine Stadium, the rear of the left sponson blew out and the boat sank. The boat was later brought to Checkmate in Bucyrus, OH for repairs.
The boat Marty had before this was a flat deck 16' Checkmate same color and name. It had a hi-rise bucket seat and a fiberglass cowl covering the fuel tank. APBA Class FJ.
Before the 16', Marty had a 15' Checkmate with a 135 hp. He flipped this boat at its first race in Lambertville, NJ on the Delaware River and never drove it again.
