300 promax or 300x??
What is the difference between these 2 engines? You can pick up a 1998-2000 300 promax around 9-10k used. A new 300X around 18K (youch!) haven't seen many used 300x on the market.
Does the 300promax have the same HP as 300X, just at lower RPM ? How reliable are these engines?
Are there any 2002 leftovers at a good deal anywhere? We will be making purchase in next 10 days and any suggestions are appreciated.
Thank you
Jennifer

Capt, is it better to switch to premix with 300s like it is with 2.5? Are they pretty reliable oil systems up to 6300?
Thanx Kevin, just called Jacos and they have a 2002 300x for 17,800. I would prefer to found it for 13k with 60 hrs as you did. Sounds like you got a good deal!
Right now I am leaning towards a 98 300 Promax with 2001 powerhead for 9500.00 (almost 1/2 price of new one).
The bank says that I can buy a new one (and make payments for next 5 years) but it hurts me to think of payments running out 4 yrs after warranty. I had heard the 250XS is rated low on power and performs close to 300, but don't know anyone running one (but sure like the 3 yr warranty)

Difference in power
The 300X is has about 10% more power than the 300.
There do not seem to be any major reliability issues.Markus' Performance Boating Links:

If you buy a powerhead instead of a complete motor, follow the torque sequence to the letter, I have spoke to 2 different Mercury reps that say the cyclinders can be distorted if they are not torqued properly, Mercury even makes a special tool to torque it, also if you plan on removing a powerhead down the road, you will need the removal tool they make, the new gaskets they use have a adhesive to seal them better and cannot be removed without the tool or making a tool of you own, I put a MADEFI tuner in mine and (2) 300 lb. men could not get it to break loose, with the tool it took 2 minutes, Kevin

250xs
LdyAv8r i would think you would be money way ahead with the 250xs it is very close to the 300x on bass boats mabye 5 mph and the fuel cost saving would be a big plus and the warranty would too and there is a guy name Matt Riddle at Performance Plus Marine in Ala. a very nice guy that will treat you as fair as you will ever be treated and will match price on new Mercury Motors his number is 256 386 7001 thanks strokerga

250xs is 5 mph within a 300x? I had heard that 300x was approx 5 mph faster then 300 promax. Does this mean a 250xs will run with a 300 (not 300x?)
It is less expensive and warranty certainly is attractive! Do you have a boat rigged with 250xs?
2scoops sent you email. It would be great getting a 300 for 6k with 2 year warranty ready to go. I never seem to find those deals.

Jerry says the guy he is getting the 300x from is changing engines from 300x to a 250xs? Why is this?
Jennifer looks forward to hearing the differences in performance, but may have already purchased by that time

A 300x
Jerry's getting a 300x, do you think you might break 80 now??? What lower are you going to run?

300 or 300x
what i was saying that there was a stroker bass boat tha was running within a 300x by about 5 mph, i am not sure if the 300x was turning a big wheel or not but the guy with the 250xs went from a 2.5 280 becasue he wanted the warranty and the better fuel savings and he says he can run 88-90 fishing so if money is not an issue then the 300x is the way to go but if you want most for the buck 250xs and i too have never seen a deal like that one on a 300 that ran on ebay and i would like to have there email if i can to see if they got some parts i need thanks strokerga
