    ZL1 Camaro

Here's a picture of a ZL1 Camaro that's in a private collection in the general area of Atlanta. A friend who was the original owner of my red/yellow/orange STV got this car brand new for his 15th birthday. He had several sisters who'd always gotten the car of their choice when they started driving and when it was his turn he told his folks he wanted a ZL1. Off to the local dealer they went, but he'd never heard of one. One was located in Colorado Chevy dealership, and his Mom jumped in her Caddy and drove from Georgia to Colorado. The dealer removed the driveshaft, hooked up a tow bar and she flat towed it back to Georgia. My friend thrashed the car around the streets of the small town where my lakehouse is located and decided he'd like to go superstock racin', so he bought a set of slicks and headers and off he went. Only problem was, there was this guy named Bill Jenkins, aka Da' Grump, that had the bar set real high runnin' a ZL1 in SuperStock hizself. My friend became frustrated, not being able to get to the national record range himself and abandoned the effort. The car was converted to a smallblock street hotrod and the ZL1 engine was sold to somebody in Ala to run in a boat. About 15 or 18 years ago I had the chance to buy the body for 3 grand with tons of documentation and no drivetrain. I passed on it, buying two other cars that the same guy had that I was interested in. The ZL1 changed hands a time or 2 and was finally professionally restored after being united with the original engine. It sold in the last year for approx 200 thou. Talk about lettin' one get away.

    Raceman,
We had a classic car auction in Mi. saturday, a buddy went with camera. Note the green Camaro in the background. The bids reached $175,000, the reserve was $250,000. Sorry, no better photos, the camera man did not know what it was until post bid, then could not find it. By the way, the Cobra is an aluminum replica.

There was a Cobra here that was a semi-replica. A local guy found some old 427 Cobra racecar that had burned to the ground and supposedly got an original alum. body to repair if from England. The frame had some damage in the race wreck and it was repaired too. He had a pretty nice 500 Shelby Mustang convertible and pulled the 428 from it and stuck it in the Cobra. Although cosmetically correct at a glance, the 428 was wrong for the Cobra, and of course he sacrificed the originality of a nice 500 convertible in the process. Some people just shouldn't try to be car guys, they just ain't got what it takes.

    No kiddin Raceman!

Heck a 390 would have been just as at home between the frame rails of the resurrected snake and unless you looked really hard for the missing cross-bolts, or other piddly things, you'd never know the difference. The layman certainly wouldn't have. To pillage a GT-500 like that should be a crime punishable by castration, or a fine .

    Some people.

That guy was definitly a car guy, he was putting the GT 500 out of it's misery and providing a public service at the same time.
