    salvage motors from keys??

Only reason I would even approach this subject is we are going to Keys next week for 5 days- I would expect there are NON submerged motors that are on totaled hulls-
Has anybody addressed trying to pick some of these? I would expect the shear volumn of damaged boats might make this a possiblity. Freight would be the killer- except there is little freight headed north from there- trucks that go south must go back north. I have shipped 5-6 motors from various places with reasonably good sucess-
I am sure Mr. Carson could allow some insight on this.

Seems like nothing but a huge ass headache to me, dicking around with a bunch of beat up salvaged saltwater junk and shipping it over a thousand miles when you live in the middle of pristine fresh water motor land. Then again, by the time I was 17 living down there I had already had my fill of saltwater crap so I may be a little jaded, lol.

I bought one one time while down there that was an insurance settlement.
V-6 OMC submerged in saltwater 24 hrs.
Cosmetically the p.head would pass as new.

After soaking in WD for 24 hrs, I broke the handle of a 2 lb hammer trying to knock a piston out of its bore!
It finally came out w/the sleeve glued to it!

I had a 13' Whaler for a while and it only saw salt. After installing a new steering cable, and greasing it, I let it sit in my driveway for 6 wks.
Went to use it and that fkg cable was seized!!
Took an air hammer to get it loose.
I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.

I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.

My experience dealing with Salvage/Auction websites was never good......Was looking mainly a Harleys but no matter what they somehow all sold for way more than they were worth.....After a couple years bidding I placed a bid on a burnt to the ground with nothing left and somehow it still sold for $3000.00.

Better off keeping an eye on CL for stuff people are trying to sell to get food.............. I know that sounds bad, but you'd be helping them.

In this part the world (middle TN) there are no motors for sale- I mean 0 - unless "needs a little work- there is a piece of metal sticking out the side"
I haunt CL for 200 miles in all directions - about 2-3 times a year I can find a rebuildable motor (strictly 2.5s) A few rotten bass boats show up with motors- but sellers think the rotten old hull and trailer are "worth a couple grand". As for salt- I have two 2.5lt 25" mids in the garage I have offered on here for free- nobody wants them-
This is just for fun - keeps me off the streets and out of most bars-

In looking for a pair of 25" motors for a project up here in Ohio and there are no 25" motors up here.

Im looking for e-tecs so that thins the herd but I've searched from Alabama to the entire east coast and they're all in Fla.

I learned yo work on large OMCs while living in Cols cuz I had one of few in state and none of the dealers had any experience working in them.
    All 9.9 powered pontoon boats.

One of the things I miss about living in Fla.

Have you checked "The hull truth" parts forum? I saw some Etec 150s being offered new at under 11K on ebay
