Mercury Ignition Coil Suggestions???
Looking for advise on ignition coils. Need to replace some on my 2.5 260 and was wondering if the CDI brand or Sierra brand are ok to use and are reliable. Mercs seem to be a little expensive. Any thoughts would be helpful. Thanks

All I can tell ya is that I just replaced all my coils with new sierra parts off ebay and they seemed well made - $30ish each so I can't complain!
I have sierra stator and CDI triggers and switchboxes on my motor - I think most people in here seem to be perfectly happy running either brand's gear

I've learned there is pretty much no difference unless the manufacture shows you the volts, ohms, bla bla bla so you can compare both yourself.
I just go with CDI because my other parts ended up being CDI and CDI sometimes don't like to cover parts if your using brand A with Brand B with Brand C.If I don't ask any questions, I'll never learn anything.

CDI was working on a new coil last year that is probably available now. I think it could be a bit hotter from what I remember.

I installed 6 new CDI coils (P/N: 184-0001) on my Mercury 260HP outboard last year, and they worked fine until this spring.
The first one was fried during the first trip this spring. It worked fine on the way out, but on the way return it lost 200rpm in when idle. And was some difficult to start. When I tested the spark, there was no spark on one. I thought that it was one of a million, and put one of the old blue one on. Then I went on a trip a couple of weeks ago, and now the secone one died. So now I have put the good old blue stuff on again.
The reason for replacing the blue once, was because some of the core was cracked on some of the old one.
So I am not so happy with the CDI one.

I think Sierra bought Mallory (prufex) which were made in Germany. These are decent and make "hencho in mexico" mercury ones look like crap..they do have diff resistance on secondary windings tho..I tried them and they did jump a 1/2" airgap no prob!!

Would you have the sierra coil P/N for the 260/280s?
