    Sportmaster Carnage

So I bought a 2.5L Sportmaster case and 15" mid at Jasper. Don't have a powerhead yet, so I mounted it to my Mirage, rolled it in my garage, and forgot about it. Turns out the brutal cold weather in the Midwest dropped the temp in my garage to 28* New Years night. I was out in the garage looking at things when I noticed the rear seal was pushed out. I then looked around the starboard side to find the case split and ice sticking out. After putting a space heater under it to thaw things out, turns out there was ZERO oil in it and over 20 oz. of water.

Yes, I should have changed the fluid before winter. However, would anybody really expect a fellow boater to sell you a case with 100% water in it? I was initially numb. Now I am pissed! Not one oz. of oil. Not one! It is really hard to trust buying used parts. 😔

I'd be pissed too, but rule of thumb on gearcases, check the oil before you buy or if it's shipped to you, check the oil as soon as you get it................. Still, seller needs to step up to the plate on this one.

The caliber of racer and people in general at Jasper you would never expect to have something like that occur or be sold in that condition. Just goes to show you gotta check always. Was there any conversation with the seller on when oil was changed or if in fact it was drained. Just curious if you were lied to.

I texted him back tonight. He claims he changed the lube a month before he sold it to me and it was fine. Said he ran it for the next month, then sold it. That can't possibly be true. How do you lose 100% of the oil?

Very possible it pushed all the oil out and filled with water without him knowing. Obviously he should’ve checked before he sold it.

    .

The frozen water pushed it out and split the case on the starboard side.

Man that Really Sucks... Unfortunately why you have to always pull the plug...drain some oil and look for water and chunks on the plug when buying used. I don't even like to see a clean plug and new oil in one when i buy am buying a used case.. usually makes me suspicious. I would rather see how its been running. Bad situation no matter what. Dave

agreed- black and stinky- with no water nor twinkles

Same goes for PH- If I find sparks plug boots off or plugs loose- not a good sign

Also unfortunately...everything inside is probably rusty too, and not much to rebuild with. Sucks.

Agreed. He said he ran it for a month before I bought it. Everything is probably toast!

Im no expert on these. What I can tell you is the rear seal is two pieces. One was completely pushed out and the other is still partially in place. I presume the spring is in the one still partially in place. Not sure.
