I'm pulling the coned lower unit on my 89 Merc 150. I'm getting water and more metal in the oil than I care to see even after changing the oil twice through the season. Could any of you gentlemen direct me to any useful threads? This will be the first time I've been into one further than the water pump.

Winch stand/ ladder/ hand rail installed.
4 point tie downs installed.
Bracing installed/welded.
Total time for this part of project: 2 weeks
1st day ... planning
2nd day ... 1/2 day trying to remember plan, drawing plan.
3rd day ... pickup materials, cut to size.
4th day ... layout, drill, fit back 1/2, weld back 1/2.
5th day ... layout, drill, fit front 1/2, weld front 1/2.
6th day ... cleanup horrendous mess.
Rest of 2 weeks was spent recuperating ... Old guys shouldn't do this stuff.
Next: get the boat off and start prepping for paint. ... Yay!Wriggleys gum makes me think of boating, "Double your engines, Double your fun"

Spring pads measured and welded today....just to find that I'll have to move a crossmember!
When I measured I forgot about the center bellcrank, being 6" wide where the spring eyes attach and the extra 3" put my front axle right on a crossmember.
NEW Plan....move that crossmember forward and add another across from the bellcrank pads!!
It's just a thang.....nothing a little primer and paint won't cure!!!WillySteve Hendricks

My winter project is to install this motor on this boat. Boat is in my garage. Motor should ship tomorrow. Plan to put the seats on sliders so my vertically challenged friend can drive some. Move the gas pedal back some for more knee clearance under the dash. Fix a few little nicks on the hull bottom and sides. Looking forward to some warmth so I can see how it runs. Hoping the 200XS will push it 85 or so. We'll see. Only my second high performance boat so I'm learning as I go.

For your vertically challenged friend... T-H Marine makes a hot foot mounting plate that allows the hot foot to be slid forward
or back. About $50-60..

So I have a new project, and since it just happened....it's now my "winter" project.
My wife was coming home from work, and a 17 yr old girl ran a red light and turned left in front of my on coming wife in her Lightning.
Whats sad is the cost to repair it is about 9K. 75% this cost is replacing, repairing the SRS (air bag system) and getting operational with new stuff. Both bags blew off.
So once I get it home the fun begins....it's to cold to finish the glass work and start painting the boat anyway....
I'm just thankful my wife did not get hurt bad. The young girl lost her license for 1 year. This was her 3rd wreck and 2nd ticket in the year or so she has been driving....
I'm all about doing "Honey Do's" ....

Hi There! Just pulled home a 16.5 Larsen Senza out of a snowbank for my winter project! Seems to be in nice clean shape overall, but its gonna need some work on the powerhead (Johnson 140). Owner gave up, and now its my opportunity!
no pics yet!!

We live in Deer country and 6 years ago I hit one in my Navigator. I was skidding and prolly only doing 10mph on impact!
The airbags did not deploy but the cost was still almost 6k.
We now are protected for front end body damage on our Lincoln, Ranger and '68 F-100:
The Ranger my son & I fabricated in my shop!

Yes, I know what your saying, about not having to be going fast to sustain $$ Damage. The speed limit on that road is 35 mph and my wife does not speed (at least I don't think so ) And that truck Will speed easy.... But she stood on the brakes and the ABS kept her from sliding and slowed her down before she hit.
I forget what the actual threshold is for the air bags to deploy from the inertia change or from speed to stop has to be XX before they deploy. You were lucky the deer didn't cause those to inflate.
Wonder what a cow catcher would look like on a Lightning ? We have deer in our area as well.James H. W2F a V-King... Want 2 Fly a V-King

Converting a 31' sonic to outboard engines. Redid the cabin upholestery extended the cockpit, rewired the console with new gauges and am now replacing the gas tanks. Hope to have tanks done by end of month then I can put bench seat across the back. Have an aluminum bracket and put a pair of merc 250 Efi on the back. Can't wait to give her a run.
