25' Checkmate Vee Bottom I/O to Twin O/B

Checkmate built a 25' vee from the early '80's to the early '90's and I always thought it was the prettiest design ever, of that size and style.
I sold these new in '90 and wanted one in the worst way but couldn't afford one, even at dealer cost.

    Regardless, always said, some day.....

An interesting tid bit is they offered this model in O/B too.
What I didn't like though, like all O/Bs of that era, they had splash wells which ate up the first 2' of the cockpit compared to current models which are flat transom w/a bolt on motor bracket.
W/this model you also lose the sun lounge due to the splash well.

My idea always, was to convert an I/O boat to twin O/B.
Ideally you buy a clean one and sell all the I/O goodies to offset the conversion expenses.

Pull out the motor and now the sun lounge gives me storage space for two fold up bikes and a inflatable dinghy for exploring.
Look at the picture of the motor now, and imagine it's gone.

Yesterday I bought one, and so it begins.

    .

    I like the 25's too!

I also like the 28's. Tony Caligure of (then) OceanOutboard in Long Island,NY got his racing fame started by racing the Checkmate 28 with outboards...then he raced Skaters after that

Please post more pics of your conversion!

I helped a guy with an OB conversion of the same hull 6-7 years ago to twin 250 hpdi Yammies. The old exhaust holes were perfect for the rigging tubes. He bought an Armstrong bracket out of florida from a hurricane boat for next to nothing. It cost more to ship it here than what he paid for it. It ran 65 ish with a guess at props. we put some pretty big K planes on it and it would loaf along at 50 through just about anything in reason. He lives in Saugatuck I'll see if i can get a hold of him for some current pics. I think he had Mitcher paint it a few years ago, it was that bright blue, purple with obnoxious pink accents

    Thx guys.

    Yes, Long Island boat.

Michael, sure ur not thinking of Baja?? I know they built a couple of 22's w/brackets.

Checkmate built a 24' Enforcer, mostly IO's but a couple of OBs but I think they had splash wells.
Bill Gohr has one that is a museum piece.

They were both small enough companies (in same town) that I'm sure they would have built you what you wanted.

    Bobbie, it's an '86.

Not sure on motors and have plenty of time to decide. I have a line on a couple of OMCs that I used own that would work well.
I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.
