From my point of view just past the start/finish line it was obvious something bad was going to happen. Most of the field had got the timing on the clock right and so they were pretty much side by side coming down to the start. A lot of the boats were running pretty loose and there was a lot of side to side shuffling going on. All it took was just one touch and that was it. As I said before Kerslake"s Baja was barely able to maintain contact with the water anyway and he was the first to go.

As I remember it, and I had a pretty good view, Reggie came up through the pack much faster and appeared to catch air off of Piggott and Kerslake as he split them. When he went over he pulled the other two boats with him.

2us, we must have been sitting close by. I was about midway down the stands a couple of rows up.

If one examines both sets of pictures it is clear that the main group all ran up to the clock early and backed off. Reggie was the only one who correctly gauged the clock and was making a full speed run to the clock ... thru what WAS an open lane. The boats at the front incorrectly assumed they were the only boats and closed Reggie's lane. This is how Reggie tells it, and the pictures back his story.

I was standing at the rail a little ways behind the clock. The close side by side proximity of those boats effectively sealed off any air escaping out from under the sponsons. This was causing quite a bit of sideways shuffling and you could see the guys fighting just to hold their lines. Also I know Harry had his boat trimmed down including the aero flaps in his bow and the boat was still trying to fly on him.

Were all of these drivers seasoned drivers? I don't recognize any of the names but I've been out of racing since 1974 and I never raced in Florida. I had much the same thing happen to me but not at the start...I was on the backstretch coming into the turn and a Molinari crowded me forcing additional air under my tunnel and almost blew me over. I was able to bring it back down but it definitely was one of my first learning experiences in a tunnel as I was new to tunnels at the time. The guy that did it came up to me in the pits and laughed about it saying "you'll learn kid" I got the last laugh though...I still won!!

I should have figured that with them running the big Mercs and OMC's. Was just a thought...maybe caused by a lesser experienced driver. Although with tunnels just a change in wind direction and gusts can make bad things happen.
