Any way to repair loose splines on a 2 piece 3.0L driveshaft?
I have a 3.0L lower with the 2-piece driveshaft, 20", and the lower splines are loose enough that the shaft rattles at low rpm. It's a 1.62 Sportmaster that works great other than the rattling. Any other solution out there other than replacing the whole shaft assembly? That would cost more than the lower is worth, I think...

a stainless 20" driveshaft and install is much cheaper than your lower unit JMO

Clean it up and have someone weld it together if you dont wanna replace the shaft....However....Its not terribly expensive to replace the drive shaft with a one piece stainless one....I guarantee your seal surface below the water pump is not long for this world if the rest of the shaft looks like that.....

The whole lower is kinda old and you can see the condition, so I'm hesitant to spend big money fixing it. Will look into the one piece shaft. The stock parts are like $1400 for both shafts and the coupler plus install.

Did someone say cheep or easy?????Degrease it and MarineTex....or 5200....I had a guy with a old L6 merc and NO splines....MarineTex worked.... for a crabber....harder on stuff than racers. 5200 would be more forgiving if not set right ....rubber wobble. Had a 25 rude with bad upper mounts. Had job with broken bolts ect. Used 5200 on searing yoke to Exhaust mount area.....worked like new or better than omc small mounts.
