    Sportmaster 3.0L Water Pump Longevity

I've been having water pump impeller failures on my 3.0L sportmaster case. On my last replacement, I used the Merc kit that included new gaskets, shaft key, and housing bottom plate. It only lasted about 5 hours. The one before that lasted about 20 hours. In each case, the white keyed bushing comes loose from the impeller so it just slips on the drive shaft.

Anyone else having this problem? Any solutions?

I have heard that there are different impellers.
plastic white bushing = fish motor
    brass bushing = HP

I have some on the wall @ the shop, I will check. :-)

Thanks for the fast responses. Thats what I have found as well. There is only one type of impeller and it is used on many Merc engines. It has the white plastic bushing glued on to the rubber impeller. For me, the glue bond fails and the white bushing slips on the rubber impeller. I haven't heard or seem any posts with this problem.

Just bad luck on my part?

I run mine all season (50 hrs) Tell us more about how you are running your boat.
type of boat, running conditions, blow the water out of the lower on the trailer by firing it up, etc, etc.

I think I may jumped ahead of myself. I lost water pressure yesterday just idling around for about 5 minutes. The same symptoms as last time when the plastic bushing spun on the impeller--zero pressure at idle and about 5-10 psi at all other RPMs. I assumed this happened again. I was wrong. I just pulled the water pump and found a very small amount of course sand in the pump. I also found some nicks in the impeller blades on the bottom edges. The plastic bushing was fine. Last week I idled through a shallow area but didn't think much of it. Since then, I've put a few hours on it with no problems then all of a sudden no pressure. I didn't see any more sand in the case but flushed it out anyway and put in a new impeller. I'll give it a try tomorrow.

Oh....my setup is a 21' Checkmate, 3.3 Yamaha w/ Hydro Tech mods, Sportmaster 1.62, usually run a mod'd Bravo prop even to 2" above the pad. It is only started in the water or on the hose...never dry.

Your pressures sound like the norm on both my 250efi and my 300x. Maybe you expecting to much.

I don't think so. My water pressure is usually 2-4 psi at idle,

well that is fantastic for a 3 liter at idle. Is that from a manual gauge or smartcraft?

I didn't get my post finished....

I don't think so. My over heat alarm went off when I was idling with 0 psi and very little water coming from the pee stream. My water pressure is usually 2-4 psi at idle, about 15 at slow cruise, 20-25 at fast cruise, and 12-15 trimmed and jacked up at speed. I've been using this setup for about 8 years. The gauge is manual using a tube.

That is incredible water pressure for a 3.0 Mercury outboard. Lucky to see 10-12 lbs of water pressure at WOT in the many 200efi thru 300x's we service.

My Merc XS's show 4-5 lbs idle, 15lbs @ poppet opening, WFO 25+ lbs

    You still have some problems

I bet exhaust is cooking the water pump. Maybe drill a very small hole in the wp tube to cool it.
