That was my favorite boat, but like you said, the need for speed got me and I went down to the 1989 Kevlar 380 center steer.

While I was running our 380 in the Mississippi Enduro circuit our biggest race was the Marathon on the river at 500 miles. Ron Huff wanted to send me 21ft 420 stating it`s rough water capabilities and would build it light enough to meet the minimum weight but all I could see was a very big boat and the 380 was already about 4-6 mph slower than the XR-2002 and I couldn`t see the 420 even close to the 380.

I can`t think of who won it twice with a 380. Not me. Best I did was second only 10 seconds out of first after 500 miles. Not to bad. Glenn Bolin won it once with a 380. He had the only one in the race. He bought it after watching "The Bull" do it`s thing in sprint racing. He asked me if I thought a 380 would be competitive in marathon racing and I said yes.
Twice? I don`t know. Let me think about it for a while and it may come to me.

Maybe he did. I just don`t remember. 380`s did well until someone put a 21inch setback on an Allison and it was over for the Laser.

Its been quite some time since I've last updated this thread, ive had a few different power heads now that I've tried.
20" 2.4 200 (78 mph) very tired motor only 6200 rpm 28p chopper
20" 2.5 225 promax 89mph @6750 Rpm 30p hoss hpd
15" 2.5 280 ros w/ some work from diamond to front half and block from a previous owner (still in break in) 88mph w/ 2 people @ 6800 rpm 28 chopper
Re rigged entire boat.
-new merc key harness w/ new wiring
-Replaced old omc gauges with Livorsi gps speedo, water temp, water pressure, volts, and fuel level gauge and Merc 10k Tach
-New steering, sea star 2.4 helm, 1500 psi lines, Latham side mount cylinder w/ custom waterjet wing plate to specs i drew in .dxf file/ hardware setup. (ran sea star pro cylinder last year, i like the latham much better)
-Over the winter i purchased a new 15" can from mercury and had Ron's Custom Fab in long island NY shorten my swivel bracket, steering arm, and shift shaft to work with a 15" mid
-Titus Cle body work repair / respray also done by Ronnie
-Manufactered/anodized my own billet parts for a brief perioid, (put some leftovers on my 280)
-Shortened 20" trim cylinder to work with shortened 20" swivel/ Full size nose cone
-New bearings, seals, rings, and fresh coated pistons for motor
-finished new rigging, assembling refreshed/shortened mid, and installing powerhead on the friday of the Raindack Romp in new york.
-Ran motor in break in mode all weekend at the romp and it still did 88 with 2 people. Cant wait to get it out of break in and work on some setup!! I think ill have a 100+ mph laser.

Looks killer! keep us updated when you get out of break-in mode. It should haul with the 280.

Great job Kyle. This was a tough rig to sell, I only ran it a few times with an Evinrude Mod III crossflow that made good power. Was enough to turn a 14-1/4" x 29" SRX at 7250 rpm. A great boat made even better now.

Hey thanks John! It’s been quite the journey getting it to where it is now and like every other project, it’s definitely not over lol. That must have been mid 90s with the omc. Really excited to see what this hull is capable of with the 280.
Thanks everyone for the responses! A lot of hard work paying off. I’ll let you guys know what it does once the ecu is finished on the break in timer!Laser 380 Ray - sold
