    Here this explains the ram.

The answer is in the design of an unbalanced cylinder.
When the helm is turned one turn, a certain volume of fluid is pumped into the cylinder.
On one side of an unbalanced cylinder piston is a rod, which reduces the effective cylinder volume.
The cylinder area on the other side of the piston has no rod, thus more volume available for fluid pumped in from the helm.
The piston side with the rod will move farther per turn of the wheel (less turns to hard over) because less space is available for the fluid than the side with no rod.
A balanced cylinder has a rod on each side of the piston, so will move equally to either side per wheel turn to that side.
    (See diagrams below.)

So with a single cylinder you have a different steering ratio going left verse going right. Is the difference noticeable?

Sorry if this troubled you Onetime. I was asking because I have seen it used and you can balance the fluid moved that way but did not know if it really was of benefit. I tend to ask a lot of questions.

Any interest in the steering components? They are still for sale.

I am currently having the issue where my 2.4 helm isn't holding enough fluid.. I think the quoted answer would solve my issue but I don't seem to understand how to set this up.. does the reservoir have to be mounted above the helm? What reservoir should I use? and what plug do I take out off the back of the helm?

Take the plug out that is at 12 o’clock looking at the back of the helm. Put a barb in there and run a hose to a remote reservoir above the helm. I used pvc with end caps but a couple different things like a mercruiser drive oil reservoir will work perfect. Just make sure it’s vented and plug the helm vent off with the plug you remove from the rear of he helm.
