    Hydraulic Side Ram Steering

Purchased Brand new Imco Side ram cylinder, Wing plate and Tilt Pin for 15" 300xs with 280 Offshore clamp. We tried to make it work using my existing seastar helm. Couldn't make it work. The seastar helm does not have enough fluid volume to fully retract the ram in and out. It will require a Capilano or Char lynn type helm with larger volume reservoir. I do not have the space in my dash to mount the larger helm. I will just stay with the seastar system that I have so I am selling the brand new Imco components.

Imco side ram (9") to suit either the 15" taylor mid or 280 using the 280 offshore clamp
Tilt pin to fit 280 offshore clamp
Wing plate to suit 300x or 15" taylor mid

Paid $2,000.00 for the 3 items. Prefer to sell together if possible.
    Looking for a fair offer.

    $1500.00

    What ram is it?

    A 15" factory clamp requires a 2" longer ram, part # SR-8-5-15

    a standard clamp uses part # SR-8-5-13

We tried the regular (non pro) helm also and it still didn't work. I think the issue might be when using the 9" stroke ram need for the extra 2" setback in the 280 offshore clamp versus the standard 7" stroke ram. Perhaps Joe has found the right model helm that works. Maybe he can find a use for these parts for his next build? Any other helm recommendations are welcome.

The helm doesnt hold enough volume of fluid. You can mount a remote resivor above the seaster helm and make it work properly.

Good idea but I am curious how do you mount a reservoir above the helm? It would have to be mounted on my deck? I am not sure where you are suggesting to mount it.

I have two of them that work perfect. Brent has two of them that work perfect. Mike has the same set up on his LCB and it works perfect. Randy has rigged several as well. Not sure whats happening here, none of us have an additional fluid tank.

Are you using a single 7" or 9" cylinder? or twin cylinders?

...can I give you a call tomorrow to discuss. Sounds like you know how to make it work.

Joe, I think your power assist holds the additional fluid needed. There might be a way to do it, but every one that we have done has had a remote resivor.

The power assist has a small additional reservoir plus the oil in the 3rd “compensating” line that connects the helm to the pump reservoir. That’s probably why yours works.

One thing to note, you cannot use a pro helm with an unbalanced side ram and you need to use the PA-1200-2 or PA-1206-2 pump, not the PA-1315-2 pump, that is specific to the pro system and only works correctly in a balanced system.

Brent didn't have a power assist in the LCB, or in the Mod VP and I don't think Mike has one either. I think that you have to tighten up the valves on the back of the helm (behind the fittings) and back them off to a 1/4 turn.
