Mercury Verado Pro Owner Reviews
Looking at purchasing at the Toronto Boatshow so I'm doing my research now. The Campion 600 bowrider is what we are thinking about and can handle up to 300hp outboard. The outboard we are considering is a Mercury Verado Pro series. 200 250 or 300. Im looking for input on the engine pros and cons. Owner reviews as well.
Thanks.

Oil contamination is a big issue with verados, particularly in cool water and lots of idling. So your better off halving the oil change intervals if you don't run them hard for hour(s) at a time.

I am sure that most of that issue is created by Mercury not using a break in oil, and running a synthetic or semi-synthetic oil from the beginning
If I were to buy a new motor I would drain the oil and run a break in oil for the first 20 hours do an oil and filter change run break in oil again for 30 hours and then change oil again, but change to a good oil. I would only fill it to the half way mark on the dip stick and then change oil every 12 months, 100 hours or if the dip stick got to the full mark, which ever occurred first.
Do not think changing oil very regularly is an issue, cost of oil and filter is minimal and is very easy to drain out or suck it out, no need to get a dealer to do that.

Only oil contamination issues Ive seen is when the thermostat fails or you prop the motor too high and lug the engine. Also when changing the oil always run the oil level at the middle to lower part of the hash marks on the stick. Aside from that IMO you will love the engine!!

The engine will purely be recreational. Tubing, crusing around. Basically its a cottage boat. I do want to do some high end blasts around the lake too.
Would the 2018 engines have this contaminant problem? Is Mercury aware of the issue? what causes this contaminant issue?

Lack of oil temperature.

Not to derail the discussion but have you considered an Etec G2? Being built and used in Canada would lead me to at least look at all the options.

I run a Verado Pro 300 on a Checkmate 2400 Bowrider with an Atlas 8" hyd. jackplate and a Mercury Bravo One 24 pitch prop. 1 person on board with 1/2 tank of gas at 71+ mph GPS. The motor is quiet, idles smooth, shifts like a dream and the power steering is nice to have. After years of playing with dinosaur 2-strokes, the Verado is a nice change of pace. They also have tons of torque for heavy loads. Highly recommended!

The issue with oil dilution is inherent to all four stroke outboards. It has to do with people that want to idle around all day, have thermostats that are not in good working condition, and low water temperatures. The engine and engine oil never reach proper operating temperature and therefore doesn't have a chance to burn off the gas that makes it past the Rings.

No issues with oil contamination on my triple set of 300 verados. 1200 hours with a lot of idling. I make sure to run them hard after idling for a while. After going verado you'll want one on all your future boats

The new Yamaha 4 stroke vmax motors were having the same exact problem with oil multiplication. They attributed it mostly to improper break-in...rings not fully seated yet. I've heard the problem goes away after the motor gets run in and rings get comfortable. Also heard that they caution against excessive idle during the break-in period for that reason. Low oil temps/cold water temps coupled with excessive idle makes perfect sense as well since cooler metal is smaller. Like RS said...looks like all 4's will have to deal with it.
Still love my loud, hard shifting, hard steering, gas and oil guzzling, ozone killing, mosquito deterring 2 stroke...96 Bullet 20cc, Yamaha OX 250+, 10" jack, labbed 30" Bravo LH w/1.25" exhaust pipes, counter rotating Bob's lower...it goes faster when you spin it the other way...
02 Dodge Cummins 2500 reg cab 4x4, converted long to short bed, up a foot, twins, injectors, fully built auto, dyno'd 582hp/1015tq
99 Dodge Viper GTS Coupe, 8.0L V-10, lowered 1", Corsa pipes/no cats, 450hp/500tq
