    3 litre merc experts

New to modifying the 3 litre block. I have a brand new 225 optimax block. Would it make a good candidate for a performance engine? I believe these blocks have an exhaust chest like the 300x block. Advise please. Popey

Nope. The X motor has a less than ****ty chest than the Podunk motors. The opti blocks work fine, just some intricate cutting is involved.

Get yourself a 250xb. It doesn't have exhaust relief slots like the 225 efi and the 300 pro max block.

That's a good block to start with . Late model sequential Motorola EFI electrics bolt right on . As do EFI heads and 300x reed plate .
The ports are small , which to me is a plus . This way you can cut them how you want . ( I would rather have material in my way , than look for it and not be there)
Only an X has the larger , less restrictive log. All others have the small passage . But that doesn't matter , it can be made to perform .

I have always considered the 3 litre engine had potential as a low stress stump puller but never had much to do with them until just recently. Always worked on high stress 2.5 f1s. I will use this 225 opti block? I have no other parts yet so I can source whatever parts are more desirable to use. If the exhaust is more restrictive than the x block does that dictate not to copy the x porting. I have a customers x powerhead down at the moment (broken crank through number 6 crankpin) so I could get port sizes and timing if required. Thanks for the replies. Popey
