Lifting horizontal motor off shipping crate
I just bought a Merc V6 motor that the owner shipped to me mounted clamp side down on a factory metal shipping crate . Seems to me lifting off the crate with a lifting ring would put stress on the end of the crank shaft before transitioning to a vertical position to put on an engine stand . What is the best way to rig up the motor to get it off the crate safely ?

It will be fine if you have your ring installed properly (bottomed out). Your main concern will be on the other side where the skeg is. Don't want it resting on the ground while the ring is going up. Luckily it's lighter on that side so a buddy can hold it off the ground while you are pumping the cherry picker.

Lift up the shipping crate and lock upright if possible.
Otherwise, lifting ring in the flywheel won't hurt. You're only lifting half(ish) of the total weight in a horizontal position.1) 1995 14' Bayliner Restoration <--Click

Leave it attached to the shipping crate to protect the skeg while lifting. Lift with proper lifting ring screwed into the flywheel. Once vertical, remove the shipping crate. The factory manual tells you to do it this way.

Clamp down is the correct way. Like mentioned above, lift it with the crate attached!
I you are using a cherry picker it may get a bit tricky at a certain point, best to use a small piece of strong rope or chain to be able to move it or spin it if necessary.
