    280 with 260 electronics issues

So I made the switch to 260 electronics with plans of drag racing the boat. It’s a v-king with a 280. Before the switch I had the boat running 106 at 7500 rpm with a 32 coerced cleaver.

Now I’ve made the switch and things aren’t running so well. I think it must be the brucato ACU. Boat starts great, idles great but lower than it used to. Around 5-6k rpm it seems to vibrate, something it never did before, very annoying but if you power through it, it goes away above 6k. I feel like the motor has lost top end power or actually I know it has. I ran a Kanner 30 merc cleaver the other day and it only touched 7000 rpm. It was a much hotter day but I don’t care. Obviously a 280 on a v-king with a 14.5 x 30 merc cleaver should be running some higher rpms.

Also really want to figure figure out why it’s vibrating.

Havent had the time time to drive the boat much as it stays at my dads place and I’m far away but I really want to get this issue resolved. If the box is running too rich would it cause the vibrating? As well as a loss of top end power???

Any ideas will help. I’ll try to get a call in to brucato next summer when I can test the boat as well. Just looking for some tips.

Brucato is probably very rich. The 280 electrics run very well, start nice and charge well. Your going to do a lot of tuning to get back where you were.

Try a smaller pitch prop if rpm stays at 7000 the ignition may be your problem.

Sorry to tell you (my two cents) you made a mistake going with 260 electronics etc. You would have been much better off just having 280 ECU limiter moved up. Been there done that

I had the 280 ECU bumped. Didn’t take many hours of running high rpms for it to completely fail so I figured I’d try the 260 thing.

Runs close to 9000 with my 22 pitch. And seems like it runs hard with the lighter load but when I’m using a big prop something just doesn’t seem right.

Timing is easy, so start there.

The next step is to see what you can learn from plug chops, i.e.
    1. Go to starting position for WOT run
    2. Change to a new set of plugs
    3. Run at WOT
    4. Switch off the ignition at WOT
    5. Look at your plugs right there on the water, so you that know what was going on in the engine at WOT

Are all plugs looking too wet or dry? Are some looking different than others?

With that information, you can start figuring out which cylinders are affected, and whether it is fuel or spark-related.

After you do a plug cut tow the boat in and read the piston tops. Ask Jay at JSRE.
