Bridgeport heads pulled, here's cylinder pics
Number one
number three
number five
right head
number two
number four
number six
left head
what do you guys think of how they look? Cylinder 4 and 6 have very small chips out of the wall in random places, they are barely pinhead size, you can barely see them in the pics. The walls feel extremely smooth to the touch but I don't know if that means anything with the chrome lining or not. The tops of the pistons are coated pretty thick with a carbon layer....don't know if they have ever been pulled or not.

Hopefully some of them are sleeved. Pin holes (chips) in chrome bore are normal. It's just porosity. The main problem I see, and it is hard to tell from a picture, if they are all chrome someone has really screwed up an ran a hone thru them. My guess is some are chrome and some are sleeved. Get a magnet or look closely and see if some are in fact sleeved. Fairly normal to see both on a chrome bore motor as it is the only way to repair a chrome bore. Remember when rebuilding or ordering rings that chrome and steel take different rings.

Do they look healthy enough to run for a bit till I tear it down? There's definitely plenty of lubrication....lol. Im still running the gas out of it that was in it when I bought it...not sure what the mix was.

Where would I get the proper sleeves if I needed them?

As far as safe to run I would hate to make that call from just pictures. As far as sleeves Pro Marine sells Advance and LA but does not list Bridgeport. I know someone makes them as mine was all steel. James Perry, Wrenchin, is a member on this site and he makes his own sleeves. Maybe he has the program for cutting the Bridgeport and if so can get you a few more horses in the process. Good luck.

+1 for James Perry!
He is in Dunlap, TN. Maybe a 3 hour drive from your town. I know him personally, and has done work for me. Outstanding workmanship!
He is very knowledgeable on the Bridgeport motors.
You already have it this far torn down....pull it and take it to him.
PM him wrechin2

Thanks guys for the responses. I took it fishing today. I think I learned how it likes to be started cause it fired right up instantly on cold start with me trying a different technique. Planed off good and ran good but seems down on power on the top end. Wouldn't turn past low to mid 5k range, didn't try it but once and I figure it won't turn cause of the low compression, it is pretty weak trying to load it on the trailer as well. I don't think the prop would hold it down that much but maybe I'm wrong, it's a 14-1/4 x 24 three blade turbo with a large exhaust hub. I pm'd wrenchin2 about the sleeves. Other than when one just burns up, how do you tell when a hole really needs a sleeve?

Children shouldn't play with dead things..... it was a creey old movie where some hippys rasied the dead. The dead killed all and went on to the world. Watch this movie. This motor looks like it has seen it's best days. Get a stock 1986 200 hp merc and save $$$$ and put this on a shelf till later. D.S.

Compression test is one test, a leak down test will show more.
If the leak down shows excessive leak down or pressure loss (< 10% or so). IMO...next is pulling the power head and tearing it down, measuring cylinders and pistons.
If the cylinder (s) are out of specification, the cylinders need boring for oversized pistons, or if chrome or nikasil, they can be re plated. More $$.
If the cylinders are in specification, and pistons are in good condition and measure OK. You might get away with just a ring job.

What is the spec range for the cylinders on this thing? I will pull the heads again and check the measurements down each one. I'm not sure yet of the cost of the sleeves but there is a shop here that will do the install for $150 a hole, I hope I don't need any but we will see. As far as another powerhead I'm afraid that would be more money than I can go with this thing right now, what would be a ballpark figure for a decent used one?

96 to 102 psi is not nearly enough to make any power and they don't start making power until 6k. Your going to have quite a bit of loot into mak8ng it run properly again as well as it canon a heavy boat. Your better off with a used 2.5 200 and a couple exhaust plates. It will do everything better.

You can always have it rechromed at uschrome in wisconsin, they are the masters at this. It will come back like a brand new chrome block. It will be Nik, not chrome. They don't do chrome anymore. Only $1200ish
If I don't ask any questions, I'll never learn anything.
