The 18' Molinari 's were running around 66/68 at that time. Rolla gave me about twenty props to test .Eventually got the boat up to 82 but it was loose and floating a foot above the water, totally out of control. Settled on a prop that handled like a dream but topped out at 72/3 mph. Was faster than Renato but we had gear case issues ?
Each of the little Shultzes was light years faster than the Molinari--------Bob paid me big bags of gold for the first one. Mike Rose swopped the big Schultze and another big bag of gold for the second one.
He won the Champion of Champions with it-------I came second, but fed five kids and paid the mortgage for next year with the proceeds.

There was plenty of SE class Schulze in Scandinavia with Merc, Carniti, König, Evinrude/Johnson all painted red.
Maybe Dieter got a good deal on red paint..

Schulze tunnels .....
Believe the first tunnel came in 1966, a single engine boat for the World Championship in Havasu. That would be two years ahead of Molinari's first Havasu effort. The story is that he sent cut and fabricated pieces for the boat to a shop in New York and he assembled the boat there. Bought a used car and trailer and drove to Ohio to get a motor. Drove to Havasu and finished forth overall, sold the boat and went home!
The best finishes for a Schulze at the "big dance" in Arizona were 2nd single and fifth overall, achieved by Mike Wallace in 1971 and 2nd overall achieved by Burt Serra in 1972. I believe it was downhill after 1972. As a side note, I'm pretty sure both of these boats were white.
As far as color goes, I'm with Lars ..... OMC red ?Last edited by willabee; 09-27-2017 at 01:57 PM.

Parker 1972
I asked Ron Hill if he had them, he's not sure. Said his stuff was put "on the top shelf" as he is writing his book. Added that he is currently writing about the year 1961!
I did find the list of 'BOATS TO FINISH AND LAPS RECORDED" in Powerboat, April, 1972. There are 20 boats on the list and the one that finished 3rd, #351 was a Schulze driven by Woods & Hauenstein.

The article goes on to talk about a freak fire near the end of the race. The Johnson powered Schulze of H.T. McCune caught fire near the fuel tank. The driver dove into the river after his efforts to extinguish it failed. The boat burned slowly to the water line.
