    Adding Trim Switch to Merc

I'm adding a steering wheel mounted trim switch to my rig and wondered what ya'll would do as far as tapping into the trim wires to set it up. Unfortunately, I'm using a side mount control box (Commander 2000 style) that doesn't have a connection for a trim harness extension. I've been trying to figure out the best way to tackle it...the wires are easy to get to on the motor, but hate to splice in there. Does Mercury make a harness that would tie in at the engine or do yall have some other ideas? I know I can get to them on the main harness, just hate to tear it up. Motor is a '96 Merc 2.5 200....

Hope your not putting it on the wheel, bad move. Go with pro trim, like a turn signal, then you always know what way is up and down. On the wheel when you turn it it can get very confusing being sideways and upside down. Either way just cut into the harness under the gunnel.

Yeah it's the blinker style... seastar pro trim or whatever they're calling it now.

I liked the rocker switch mounted sideways, down side closest to the rim (easiest to reach) on my race boats. But with hydraulic steering the blinker switch is the way to go.

If you don't want to cut anything just run wires from the solenoids. A little extra weight and possibly an pain in the ass but eveything else is as before.

Most of the v-6's of that generation have a 2nd set of trim wires at the harness plug in on the motor end with bullet conn's. A run of triplex wire going up to the helm would do it. They are green for dn and blue for up. Red for power.
