    300XS or G1 250 H.O.???

    Hey guys;

Just bought a Triad V21, boat had a 225 OMC and I'm looking to power it with a big block greenie. I like the design and hear lots of good on the G1 250 H.O. but Merc comes with sport master and there are good used ones kicking around for good prices.

The goal of the boat is lake cruising and performance blasting and maybe some drag racing if I can find a class the boat will be competitive in. Not looking for big top end numbers (low 100's) but rather, fast acceleration, reliability and something that will idle along sipping fuel.

Please give me the good and bad on both these motors. Note: I will be looking at late model used.

G2 is not an option as cost is high as well as the weight.

    Thanks

300xs...It just flat out works. I'll keep my opinions about etec to myself but if you look at the guys running 300xs' on similar size/style boats up here they are all at the top of the food chain. I've been passed by Ken's SRV and I can tell you it has LONG legs.

I was even looking at the 250 SHO, the fishing guys say the XS is still faster. Pretty cool motor all the same.

I love my Etec on our ski boat, but I'd go 300XS in your shoes, just for the sportmaster

Just my own opinion but I know its shared buy lots. Alot of guys have spent alot of money and time on other motors to try and make there non merc run as fast and quick as a 300xs with 1.62 SM. There are some who have achieve there goal but seems all adapted what ever there flavor of motor with a SM to get there. Bang for buck 300xs is hard to beat for your application I feel. There are going to be alot of 300xs motors for sale soon with the production and sale of the CRT motor about to launch. I wish i knew when thats going to happen but I heard soon how ever long that is. LOL

I have had both motors. The E-Tec was a new 2011 with a Lightning 2 gearcase. I swapped the Magnum for the Lightning. The motor was very strong out of the hole and had good mid range performance. Motor cranked first time, idled great, very quiet and relatively trouble free.

I bought a new a new 300 XS to replace the 250 HO. The Mercury has been great. It is strong out of the hole and this motor pulls strong all the way to top speed. Starts first time and runs great.

The Mercury is about 4 MPH faster and gets at least 20% better fuel economy.

If I had to buy a new motor, it would be a 300 XS.

Kirk, I run a G1 Etec on my Quartershot. It works very well.
I would not be opposed to running a Merc 300 on it and have run with some of the XS powered boats up here.
You can put a Sporty on the Etec to get you the 1.62's to run the big numbers.
I think it all comes down to $$ and personal choice.
Tuff has had great success with the G2's as well.
Just my 2 cents to add to the confusion!!

Go 250XS pro and swap out the lower with a sporty. DBR ECU reflash makes it 290 hp. 5 year warrenty and $4000 less purchase price.
