Messing round with boats is fun !! the learning never stops ,even after more than 30 years there's always something new happening somewhere ! BUT somethings never change and some problems never go away and just keep reoccurring !!so moved into Composite Forensics , Now that something completely new !!

WOW - Who would have ever thought that this thread would come so far off of the tracks that it would morph into toilet paper origami with movie quotes ? outstanding !!!

Why didn't you think of it ?? its simple !! oops forgot it takes some thinking about to make it work properly !

I have hired and worked along guys who have claimed to be the father of some invention, only to show them others use it as well

Good for you for thinking but dont think others cant think as well, sometimes you are not always the smartest person in the room.

    what ever!!
One question not one person has asked is HOW DO YOU GET GEL COATED GLASS TO GO AROUND A CORNER WITH OUT IT CRACKING ?

Themaking of origami flat and curved panels
Ok to make this origami folding panel took some thinkingabout HOW to get glass to go round corners and how to elliminate the gel coatcracking and still have a nice shiny glossy finish !
    First a step back wards!!
Understanding how gel coats works from the moment you pourthe catalyst and begin to mix it !, throught the spray application and then waiting to reach the right time ofthe gelcoats gel stage !!
Knowing how gel coat goes hard an what is happening duringthat process??.
Unlike paint that relys on eveaporation or absorbtion ofthiners etc to gradually eveapaorate and or soak to go hard over a long periodof time from the top surface downwards !.
Gel coat does the exact opposite it hardens from the mouldssurface up towards the top and this was the key to being able to get the fineglass ( will come back to this in a moment ) gently pressed INTO the gel coat yetnot pressing hard enough for the glass filiments to go all way into the softpartially gelled gel coat that would show on the finished out side surface !!
Glassreinforcing the gel coat as close to the outside surface as possible withoutgoing through is the key to helping elliminate cracking when bending the glassto form a smooth raduised rounded corner!!

Nowwhat sort of glass should be used and why!!.it needs to be fine and it needs tobe strong , Tissue is not the answerat all !
Ichose the finest woven cloth I could find we had on site!.usually use as askinning cloth for wooden boats !
Afterlooking and thinking I decided to make all the glass strands run the longestway possible ,so cut the glass on a 45 degree angle so all the strands wereeffectivly the same length and wouldn’t cause any unsightly fibre print throughin the gel coats surface !!. Again the longstrands are easy to bend across and round the corner with the least amount ofstiffness to go round a curve!!
Okthat took care of the curved corners, the flat surfaces of the panels were sprayed at the same time sothe normal hardening time is allowed before the first layer of a 450 gram csm glasscut to a exact perfectly straight line where the curve would start from andstepped back a little further the heavyer fabric with csm on top then a corefitted procisly to accomidate for the bending of the corner and not make avisible hard crease where it ended!.
Careand attention to fine detail cutting and fitting during the wet glassing, Peelply needs to be used to make as smoother transition as possible to anyvariations in thickness of the glass and the resin build ups as this will makeuniform bending impossible!!
Thecore should be cut at a 30 degree angle not 45!! And the inside laminant on thetop of the core needs to be kept back from the angled cut to give the leastamount of chance of the heavyer glas
s arlyand glass fibres will press all the way through and show on the outside surfaceagaint the mould !!,
Allthe resins used during this part needs to be mixed with a good amount of thegel coat to get the deepth of colour and so there will be NO SEE THOUGHSany where !!

Inever said it was going to be easy!! But the rewards of glossy nicely curvedradiused corners internal or external are well worth the effort!!
As youbecome more familiar with the whole process so it becomes much easyer andquicker to make!
Planningthe layout of a whole long panel is crucial and has to be done very accurately toget the right amount of area for each curved corner !

Thisfar by now you can see many areas where if you don’t know everything aboutresins and gel coats and how uneven thicknesses of mateial can behave withdifferent shrinkage rates and pulling and distorting etc you really can end up with a disaster on your hands .
Productknowledge is something I am always including in just about everything I write about!!
Alsothe accurate measuring and mixing of catalysts and hardeners on all resins andgel coats, Getting the timing right and knowing exactly the gel time of the gelcoat !, then mixing resin and rolling the fine glass into the semi gelled gelcoat is critical , catch it to late the glass is not close enough to the moulds surface!!

I didn't invent it I just saw a way it could be done and took it and made it work !!

And what is you chosen profession ?? do you have anything to do with composites or is it just a pastime and a place to pass the time ?
