Paper gaskets: does the brand or material matter?

I've done a bunch of gasketing and re-gasketing this summer, with random gaskets bought off eBay and Amazon. They all seem to seal ok (so far).

but there is quite a variety in look and feel of quality that makes me wonder if the higher quality ones will seal better after many years, or just as important, come off cleaner with less scraping after many years at servicing time?

I have always liked the blue looking ones that have a rubber like layer over ...but I really don't think there is much difference between any of them ...unless your talking head gaskets don't think it matters....as far as removing all ...no better way than the small 2" Scotch-Brite disks that attach to your cordless drill or air tool...... takes the gasket off fast but won't hurt the parts

A friend of mine used to run an automotive machine shop. Had to mill a lot of heads because the mechanic would use one of those to take off the gasket. Ever run one of those against a steel part? Notice the sparks? It's taking off metal...

Not saying that one cannot use that tool and not damage a part, but it's certainly possible!

After reading your post I went out to the garage and checked the package...... sorry for giving bad info guys I'm sure you could mess your stuff up with them right on the package it says for grinding and finishing metal ...
but I've never had a problem using them Click image for larger version.

For removing gaskets, I use a single edge razor blade and gasket removal spray.

That's what I use, a single edge razor. Didn't know about gasket remover though. Thanks as always, mate.
