its a whole new world as when you use carbon epoxy the glues work very well so you can glue stuff in ( i'm sure all designed for aircraft) if using esters, yes they need laminating.
You can see where the money is spent, laminating is for low production one off, glues are to help high volume stuff and easy repeatability meaning better tolerancesLast edited by powerabout; 08-10-2017 at 09:00 AM.

the glue we used for the Korean boats all came from nz specially flown in
Adhesive technologies make a glues called HPR 25 has a 8 hour working time and a 12 hour cure IT will not let go once it stuck its there for life the decks to hulls had only glue that's it !! I have worked with the guys there nearly all my life we all grew up together AND ID TRUST MY LIFE WITH ANYTHING THEY MAKE !!
HAVE HEARD ALL THE GLUE ONLY SING SONG FOR YEARS but has never and will never take over good old simple laminating!!Messing round with boats is fun !! the learning never stops ,even after more than 30 years there's always something new happening somewhere ! BUT somethings never change and some problems never go away and just keep reoccurring !!so moved into Composite Forensics , Now that something completely new !!

i'm saying only glue epoxy carbon parts as they are strong enough to support the low surface to surface issues
ester are too week to be gluedLast edited by powerabout; 08-10-2017 at 07:16 PM.

THE GLUING SURFACE the designer had drawn was only 35 mm wide so we more than doubled that to 85mm wide AND that was great !
You are using things I really never deal with ! Epoxy and carbon !!I HAVE NEVER IN ALL MY LIFE EVER FOUND A USE FOR EITHER !! cant stand either of them ! Have built replacement parts using vinyl ester and just ORDINARY glass that have far out lasted the carbon parts that had broken in a very short time !! WHEN you making things it sometimes not the materials that are at fault but the way those materials SHOULD have been used and laid .One of the biggest things is flexibility or the lack of being able to flex and absorb shock and impact and yet survive virtually un damaged .Messing round with boats is fun !! the learning never stops ,even after more than 30 years there's always something new happening somewhere ! moulded fibreglass grids are definitely the way of the future , they are accurate ,they fit where they should !! there is no guess work involved ,They can be made much lighter than any wood stringer system that has to be glassed in any way and the chances of the wood becoming rotten in a few years time PLUS the glass holding the wood in place delaminating off the soggy wet heavy wood so in reality it the glass that's there that's doing the work not the wood !! so why bother???
Glass one off grids can be made from sheet glass same as what's used normally just takes some thinking about and fitting properly and glassing in place !!Last edited by tunnels; 08-11-2017 at 03:13 AM.

Expensive to make ?? you got a complete wrong idea of grids ,They could be made to fit almost any boat and they are not expensive to make just the opposite !!
If you employ race boat technology and materials into production boats during manufacture then after a while it becomes just second nature and a piece of cake and you have hulls that are completely capable of higher speeds much more they will ever go normally unless some one fits a proper race motor on the back . Over building is very easy to do if you use the right materials in the right places better quality materials and less of not the old thinking of adding and making things heavy and thick !!Use your knowledge from past experience's !!
you are looking at all the negatives of making grids! Turn all those negative thoughts into positive thoughts and do a complete comparison and check list of for and against of both systems !!.Last edited by tunnels; 08-11-2017 at 03:39 AM.

when is a grid not a set of stringers?
I'm thinking of a molded grid glued/glassed in then floor added over that.
How would you construct a grid for say a 20' vee bottom runabout?

hahahahahAVE HAVE SEEN GRIDS 50 foot long for a big cruising boat !! yachts and big sail boats have grids some are in made sections so big main bulkheads can be fitted directly to the hull and deck !!
last company we had grids for every model as the boss would touch anything that had wood any part of the boat !!
I have some photos I will send you !!will take some finding amongst 5000 plus work photos !
When planning on making a grid you have to really do your home work as to what you are trying to achieve !! floors inside , stringers and there spacing and length , under floor fuel tanks, wiring loom trunks ,fuel fullers at deck level one side or both, plus the breathers, fuel line to the motor ,have to make a list !!! then there's access into the compartments !!, so then do you make a light weight cored glass floor instead of ply wood ,lift out hatchs and so it goes on ??can make simple or as complicated as you like !!Messing round with boats is fun !! the learning never stops ,even after more than 30 years there's always something new happening somewhere ! BUT somethings never change and some problems never go away and just keep reoccurring !!so moved into Composite Forensics , Now that something completely new !!

If you are making the same thing for the same boat each one is works out to be a fraction of the cost of making a one off Plus the additional up sides are , its 100% glass and ,will never rot , never seen one ever break and they, support the floor and can carry your ,under floor fuel tank and still, have storage space to spare ! depending on boating regulations the under side of the grid its self can also be, filled with buoyance foam ,as a further safety feature !!
So as I see it there are more fore's than against's !!Messing round with boats is fun !! the learning never stops ,even after more than 30 years there's always something new happening somewhere ! Stringers !! preformed with glass over a foam core and a strip of carbon on top !! how would you like to use them in you boat ?? Yes or no or maybe ??
And if not why not ??Messing round with boats is fun !! the learning never stops ,even after more than 30 years there's always something new happening somewhere !
