I am back from vacation. Installed the new starter, it spun, popped up and engaged the flywheel - which the old starter did not do. Couple of good cranks and my charged battery went flat.
new battery and I was good
was the old starter bad?

Sure if I lived close to my boat I could have done more diagnosing. $80 for a starter was cheep vacation insurance. I still have the old one and per the advice here will hang on to it
