Has anyone used a single sided wingplate on a 300xs?

Looking at cutting a stubby wingplate for my 300xs. I was tryinging to get the steering ram as close to the engine to increase steering speeds.

The idea would be to run a short wing plate off the engine on the one side.

Has this been done, would one side be strong enough? I thought I seen it once, but can't remember .

"Has anyone used a single sided wingplate on a 300XS?" ...They have been made by the performance steering company's ever since the 3 litre was introduced in 1996. No matter if they are designed for a single or multi-engine application, the design wraps around the entire mid, more or less, to take advantage of all possible fastening points. Your design in the photo ain't gunna cut it...for many reasons. Study up on the many 3.0 litre plate photos that are out there, and you will see what I mean. Nice that you have a clevis rod end, instead of a standard rod end.

Strength (using a horseshoe design to mount with as many fasteners as possible) for safety is the first concern. Clearing the pan and not putting side load the ram (which wipes out the seals) is the second concern -been there and cost us two races over the years. No need to shortcut this when there have been systems designed by engineers that are ready for purchase and you can have them in two days (JMO). You can control your speed with fluid flow increase or decrease at the helm.

Does that clevis at the end of the cylinder need a 1" , or even a 7/8" bolt ?

That looks to be the 5/8" bolt.
I agree with a saddle/horse shoe style wing plate.
Also those hose need to be better routed if they are not temporarily mounted. That rear one looks to have a kink that will only get worse when trimmed.

I cut down a regular wingplate to work on one of my Argo's, worked fine.

    Mr. Tee ,
You know I have built enough wing plates to remember what size bolt goes in there ..

The myth of needing every conceivable location to tie onto is more of a CYA move than that of necessity .
The reason I axed , is because each one of those 10 mm powerhead studs has a clamping load of around 4000 psi and a tensile point of over 6500 lbs . ( enough to lift a truck off the ground)
For a single sided ram and still be overkill :
The area of a 10mm bolt is 78.57
Using the three on the side and two across the back ...
    78.57 x 5 =392.857 or 22.365 mm / .881"
7/8 th's = .875" so in my world of GOBIT , the 5/8th's ram bolt is gonna break before the plate shear's off ...

Trim line hose fittings are facing the wrong direction. Do what you want on the plate. I however tend to side on strength and safety. I agree one bolt has tremendous tensile strength, however vibration can snap a bolt over time. I have pulled plates off engines that were missing a bolt or snapped off.

Problem with putting it close is you loose "leverage" to steer the engine and the effort goes way up. I made my own wingplate so that is how I know. I ended up making a second one that uses all the stroke of the ram, and allows full steering travel each way. And mine is a single ram and has been 114 on my skater. Mine is a horshoe design and uses all the 3/8 bolt holes in the mid. My main bolt diameters are 9/16".

The steering hoses are far to long, they came off the boat I got the steering from and are going to be replaced asap. I can remove the single side mount wing plate and install the horse shoe style plate except I seem to have misplaced the small plates that mount to the engine that the lager plate bolts to.

Anyone know who manufactures this style? Maybe I can call and get some replacements or I can CNC a set from 3/8 plate steel and powder coat them..

Chaz, you cunfussss the crap out me with all those x,=, #.... etc....
Yes, you could be correct on 7/8" and you build one heck of a wing plate! If I remember correctly it was a saddle style though....
I think this is being used for a race application so he may not be looking for full geometry or side to side strokes.
Either way you can never be over thinking or building important and safe steering components.

Rick, check with Chaz see if he can help you.

IMCO makes a them but I don't know if they sell them separate or not. Convert it to a 15" can from Todd and run that plate-

Clevis ends on steering rams/tiebars use a polished shoulder bolt. Never a regular bolt.

They are not willing to sell them separate.. so would machining them out of 3/8 plate steel and powder coating them be an issue? I dont have access to Stainless Steel in my time frame.
