3 try starting with hot engine
After spending lots of time $$$ and starting from scratch on know how with this engine my 89 150 xr4 is running like a top. This site has been a great help! Finally getting some fun out of that hole in the water. Did some tubing with the family yesterday, after killing the engine for a few minutes for boarding it took three times to get it started, happened a few times. It would fire but bogged out. No one wants the worried look from the wife. I could be wanting perfect preformance from an old engine but I thought maybe y'all may have some wisdom on this. Trying to start cracking the throttle it revved way up leading me to believe its a rich situation. All the electronics have been replaced, new fuel pump carbs have been rebuilt and floats set per manual and synced, engine has been timed to spec. In the interest of keeping things stock it does still have an idle control module, likely culprit?

It was around 80 degrees. Other than the reluctant hot starting it runs great.

So once running it idles good and runs good idling in gear?

Alc blended fuel, Idle mixture , fuel pump pressure , hot fuel. Maybe bump the idle a hair, maybe a degree ign at idle.

Yes ^^ after a link and sync, set your idle speed in the water ( not on the muffs ), and in gear with closed throttle timing. jmo..

I think it's my error in timing I had it at 5 degrees at cranking speed for idle. I need to get the timing light out on the water apparently. The sticker on the flywheel cover says with the idle control unhooked timing pickup 5 degrees ATDC with engine idling at 600-675 rpm. Is this with the prop engaged in water? Forgive me I'm a newbee to these engines and procedures. The Clymer manual I have says 12 degrees for my serial # which is OC218159. V-King, being an electrician your avatar gives me a grin

HA..Yea, long story behind that avatar.... I found it on the internet, it reminds me of a time long long ago.....
Forget the sticker on the flywheel cover for idle rpm and timing, save for the WOT Timing setting being about 22-23 deg or so, unless your fuel quality is low. After you have set wide open throttle timing, set the boat in the water and adjust your idle speed in gear to your liking with the closed throttle timing. Done deal. And you will like the way it runs better at low speeds.
Oh, yes. Get rid of that idle timing control module Before doing any of the above. It can cause all kinds of mayhem... again...just my opinions and the way I set my motors.James H. W2F a V-King... Want 2 Fly a V-King

It was a little different working on the engine out on the water, got it set though. The idle control module is history. We ran nearly WOT for about 10 min cut the engine gave it a few minutes turned the key and it fired right up! Thanks again for the help! One other newbee question if you could, is it better to ease into gear feeling the clutch dogs or just dump it in?

No easing in... You don't want to hear any noises, other than maybe a "clunk" into gear.
Other wise your knocking the needed sharp edges off those ears on the gears.
Move the throttle from neutral to in gear in a quick move. But without going far enough to engage the throttle.
Some bypass the neutral safety feature and start in gear to avoid that shock on the LU and drive line. But this isn't a good thing for everyone.
It could be hazardous if not respected.James H. W2F a V-King... Want 2 Fly a V-King

Man I hope I haven't damaged anything. I had been trying to avoid that unnerving boat jarring kachunk! going into gear. I've changed the lower unit oil twice and noticed some small flakes on the magnet, I bet I was the cause, damn. Anyway thanks again for the advice, the old Merc is running better than ever!
